Re: Whoa hey the where do i want to move after i finish coll
I actually know people who do PR work in Dallas, so I know it's there, although they work for evil blood-sucking corporate monster in their faux independent shop. Dallas is survivable in terms of there being some small population that does different music/culture/food/consumption culture. Not ideal, but survivable.
For me, SF and Chicago would be too expensive in ratio to any cultural virtues. (I find Chicago horrendously overrated, even before cost of living is factored in.) I don't know much about KC or Madison, and maybe that's why they have some appeal, but I'd look at them. I'm guessing decent living costs and maybe not a critical mass of young people crowding out and undercutting each other for entry level jobs because they're in a "cool city." I did that with Austin and it wasn't worth it.

I love d/fw but really I just love Denton. Great music scene, small town feel, isn't soulless, doesn't blow balls.

Funky Town aka Minneapolis/St. Paul rules! If it were not for adverse circumstances, I'd still be living there now. It's a big city, but still doesn't feel too cluttered nor sprawly. Plenty of businesses to get good PR jobs at. It's ultra-bicycle friendly. Plenty of bands stop there. Cost of living isn't crazy.
God I miss it sooooooooooooo much.

Portland is fine if you want to be up to your ass in wannabe hipsters. which is to say it's where the poseurs who used to move to the Bay Area in the 1990s, when you could still afford to move here, go now.
the Bay Area is way too expensive for humans to live, and largely due to this the creative arts have been stagnant here for years. there's little in the way of a live music scene, and no real support.
i grew up in Chicago, and if the weather--which combines the worst aspects of Miami and Moscow--weren't so horrid and i wasn't tied to someone who's a dyed-in-the-wool Californian i'd seriously consider moving back there. it's a large enough city that you have access to the full range of US urban fare, but less overwhelming than NYC or LA.
if i was going to choose anywhere else to live based on what to do, i'd go to Los Angeles. yes, it's awful in many ways, but everything is there. i'd get a little apartment in Long Beach and ride my bicycle by the sea, and thus be insulated from some of the urban sprawl.
i wouldn't choose a place to live based on the loveliness of the sea coast, the excellent access to mountains, the perceived hipness of the locals, or any of that crap. find someplace with a climate that's bearable, there's access to the stuff you need, and you can find work. and i wouldn't choose to live in a small city...as Mark Almond said, "if you're going to wallow, wallow deep." you're already subjecting yourself to urban conditions; why not have access to the full range of positive attributes of a major metropolis?

Boston would probably be good for you. It's a city, but it doesn't feel like one. It feels and acts more like a town. That's why I don't really like it. But it sounds like that kind of thing may be right for you.
