Any anime fans?

Post by Caesar »

Judging by some avatars and posts, I'm guessing some of you are anime fans. So, whatcha like? I started early with Kimba the White Lion and progressed through the Americanized versions of Robotech, G-Force, and Voltron. In the mid '90s, I reinvigorated when I discovered Devil Hunter Yohko, Tenchi Muyo, Evangelion, and a whole host of others. I really kicked into high gear in the early '00s with Cowboy Bebop, Lain, and I discovered Uresei Yatsura. Really, I bought hundreds of DVDs.

I've eased of a bit mostly because I have so little time to watch the stuff. Really, I just rent something here or there, or I check out one of the titles I haven't sold off.

So, anyone else?

I've watched a lot from the 90's and until 2005, but now i really don't have time...by the way I can't find any interesting anime right now regardless of some OVAs (ghibli and gainax studios...) and the new akira toriyama's dragon ball episode which i think taht was superb.

occasional fan:

Tekkonkinkreet<< The best anime! Based on the manga by Taiyo Matsumoto, my favorite manga-ka. I think a lot of people here would be in to this. And its a movie not a series so its cheep! Also based on Matsumoto manga is "Ping Pong", an awesome live action movie.

Beck <<< Fun if not highly unrealistic take on forming a band. Good show, lots of the characters are supposed to be American and so there is english mixed with japanese that is pretty gut busting. Decent music, lots of cameos from J-rock bands.

Ghibli stuff
Evangellion
FLCL
Read or Die
Sailor Moon (for real. Sailor Moon gets pretty sick in the japanese versions, especially the last season)
Dragon Ball/ DBZ
Cowboy Bebop
Perfect Blue
Tokyo Godfathers
Cat Soup
Paprika
Ninja Scroll
Akira
the usual suspects i guess

Japanese live action is sick too...

I really like Manga.... mainly because when I catch an Anime on TV its in the middle of something and I have no clue what is going on.

BUT back when Toonami was on Cartoon Network.... i liked the original Dragon Ball Series.... and this other show.... that I forgot the name of. Actually tenchi Muyo sounds familiar... (looks it up) yep it was Tenchi muyo.

But my main Manga: Initial D. I have a stack of 30+ volumes. :thumb: And I've just started buying Dragon Ball Mangas.

I was into Inuasha for a while.

Then got into
Lost Exile
Real Bout High School AKA Samurai Girl
Mai Hime
Scrapped Princess

And a couple of others that I can't remember the names of off hand.

Just saw the first 2 episodes of DN Angel, not sure if I can get into it that much.

I do get the Anime Network and Anime Selects.

Ghost In The Shell (the movie. Hate the series) and Trigun are among my favorites.

When it comes to manga, anything by Tsutomu Nihei.

If anyone can think of any other cyberpunky/dystopian manga to check out in the vein of BLAME! ...I would love you.

I like the Bleach manga...but the anime is so far ahead of the books, everytime I try to watch, I'm thrown in the middle of something I've never even heard of.

I wanted to get into Blood+ but then it got cancelled. Or taken of Adult Swim, whichever.

I very recently got into Gundam 00. I have no idea what it means or what's going on, but it's cool.

Does Boondocks count?

No sony is milking the DVD release by splitting it into two collections, once sony makes as much money as they feel they need to one hopes they will finally release the second half of Blood+

Ghost in the shell -> Best anime movie
Trigun -> Best anime OST (if you haven't listened to it, DO IT! Jazz, country, industrial , its fucking awesome)

About the cyberpunk request... Gunnm , i think in the usa it was called battle angel alita or something like that. They play rollerball (from the movie) in this manga, which made me very happy ^__^

+1 Loved Gunnm and The last order is on par with the first series, I'm, impatiently awaiting volume 11

Also the Ghost in the shell manga is a fun read, more humor and more chaotic then any of the anime, although I'm not that into the actual character drawing.

I think Vampire Hunter D and Hellsing was the first real animes I saw, but then I went straight to Cowboy Bebop.
After that most other animes didn't seem as good. I still enjoy them, of course, it's just that none of them are as magical. Ghibli movies come close, but they are an entirely different animal. Come to think of it, most of the epic anime movies that everyone likes are usually enjoyable to me (you know which ones they are)
FLCL is nuts! Hellsing is still awesome cakes with the OVA's, and then uh.. Elfen Lied, Afro Samurai, and that one made out of the video games... Devil May Cry? Google says that's correct. Those are ones I remember enjoying moderately, at least at late night insomnia days.

Guilty of watching Naruto from time to time (and getting annoyed and surprised with the amount of flashbacks and the slow progression. Ten episodes to get through an insignificant fight? Flashbacks of something that happened a minute ago? Yay. (still guilty of watching it regardless  ))

Tips of what I might enjoy is welcome!
