Someday...the previously-mentioned 'ray; a Ric would be wonderful; a German Warwick $$. All are actually do'able with some disciplined saving.

Amp-wise I'm actually is decent shape (I think), unless somehow I find myself playing stadium gigs sometime*. A second 8 ohm cab for my Trace head will up the output to 260 peak watts, which should be enough for whatever gigs may happen around here.

i always felt that there wasn't enough extra in an expensive bass to justify it. that the diminishing returns the higher price point you get was silly and that i was fine with the Dean Edge 6'ers i had. man. all that changed when i finally got my Dingwall. it was way more than i ever thought i'd spend on a bass, and i just wish i could have afforded one earlier.

but yeah, it's all about baby steps. i just cut back on pedal purchases for a few months, didn't eat out till it was paid off, and tried to cut corners for a big.

SO damn happy with it.

and maybe i'm being weird, and i do love the range of tones that come out of my little layday, but it was more about the design. the fanned fret SPEAKS to my nerdy interiors. and it's the most comfortable bass i've ever owned.

I keep forgetting to ask someone about the fan fret concept...how do you tune that? I keep thinking that the harmonic points and stuff would be in weird spots and/or not line up, ya know?

What works works... As I have said before 'm building a five string flying V with a P pickup. Why?
After 17+ years it's time to retire the soundgear, don't get me wrong it still is a great sounding and playing bass but I am sick of the preamp when not using the bass clean, and really for looks on stage it is too small for me. Also I am finding the pre + barts don't have the dynamics that a P bass has. Also since I got that burny flying V I have more fun playing that bass then any other... but it's a shortscale and a 4 string which doesn't work for most of what I play I NEED 5 strings and I actually get lost at time on a 4, I'll reach over to play something that isn't there  So I though: fuck what I need it a passive five, a five string P and it would be fun and cool if it was a BIG flying V

Basically each string is it's own thing with it's own scale length. the fanning is how it stays in tune actually, actually it is a rather simple idea, a lot of the ideas behind the strings being different lengths has to do with the idea of "string gauge vs pitch vs scale", piano, harp and dulcimer people argue about this all the time. The people that really got it working were novex http://www.novaxguitars.com/

woof. DESCRIPTIVE. yeah, the basic way that makes sense to me is a long enough B to NOT be a floppy farting useless noodle and a small enough high C that it doesn't sound like a guitar or steel drums.

LURV it.

I was kind of afraid to mention that I like the idea of fanned frets.
However...I'm not a fan (HUR HUR HUR) of coffee table basses, and the two go hand in hand. Though, to be honest, "coffee table bass" is pretty vague. It doesn't just mean the instrument has a natural finish...like a Warwick isn't coffee table.
But a PRS guitar is. Know what I mean?

Anyway, uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I had some point I was actually going to make but my brain seems to be offline right now.

Holy crap I haven't been here for ages. Sorta ditched the whole e-world thing for a bit, stopped visiting forums, killed ye olde Myspork and Facebutt, etc. Found out that I spend more time with books and my wife by doing so. Also, that whole concept of BEING BORED AS FUCK AND LOVING EVERY SECOND OF IT, which I had forgotten about 15 years ago, was regained.

:joy:

Of course, I suppose it only natural that I gravitated straight toward this thread. I now only visit TB for work related matters, which isn't often. Great resource! Silly people. Until I have to pay off my 0% credit card at the end of the year I probably won't even try to sell anything.

The concept makes sense to me, with the way my hand moves around the fretboard. Never played one tho, so I dunno what it would be like in the real world. Brother behndy isn't the only person who's said that theirs is gold, however. I'd like to try one sometime.

Fanned frets look awesome. The only thing that worries me would be bends... since some of the frets would cause the string to move further back as you bend. I seem to have read that's not an issue.

It's a moot point, though. I can't afford one. : (

It seems like the high dollar basses are less aimed at players and more aimed at doctors, lawyers and other rich fucks. Sure you might have a lucky guy with a comfortable job who saved up and had an awesome wife or whatever,...but I feel like a lot of the people that buy Foderas, Laklands, Ritters, Sadowskys ETC buy em as collector or as investment pieces. They aren't players. I'm not gonna say that you aren't allowed to do that; spend your money however you like....but what floats mah boat are workingman's instruments. I like finishes not flamboyant burls. I like understated, not covered in gaudy tinsel. I like a bass I can play in a smokey dive bar and not worry about it attracting attention,....or some drunk spilling beer on $8000 worth of one of a kind burl, coco bola (it's pretty but really hard to work with), wenge (splinteriffic), or whatever the flavor of the month is.
