The Mudfuzz Tele VI thread!!!

Post by grindonomicon »

Going to put one of these together in the next couple weeks!

Got a Squier Affinity Telecaster for @ $85. A sweet Royal Blue color, not the Metallic Blue they're selling currently. I'll post a pic tomorrow...

I'm going to dremel out the neck pickup for a humbucker... What would be a good one to use? I've got a couple pickups in the parts drawer; a Fender Atomic neck, a Duncan Design Detonator bridge, and a DiMarzio Air Norton... I'm going to be using it fuzz-on all the time, for doomy A-tuned grind-sludge. Kinda leaning toward the Air Norton, I've got an Invader in another guitar, and the Detonator seems like overkill (the bad kind, not the good) in the neck position...

Thinking about one of these guitarfetish pickups to replace the bridge pickup:

Any advice appreciated! :poke:

Hmm not sure, I don't know the sonic character of either off hand. What's the Ohmage diff on them? you want more ohms.

I have the pickup that came before the invader and that was a good pickup for bari :idk:

The tele pickup there looks ok, never know intill you try it.

Oh and I really recommend getting those angled saddles from stu mac, it really helps with the whole playing in tune thing.

The Detonator is 16k+, ceramic; the Air Norton is 12.5k, alnico 5.

Main concern is the Invader + Detonator already sound harsh without rolling off high end in the bridge position on guitar. I like the output of the ceramic pickup, but I like the tone of medium-high output alnico pickups much better. In a guitar... Never built a 'ravager of cities' bass before!

I know what you mean. There is also the fear of one being louder then the other... 12.5k should give you some good lows, a normal P pickup is what 10k-11k. AND there is always the "if you don't like it try the other pickup" thing

Here is weird one for you... on the invader style pickup I have, I thought it was rather shrill but I still like it, and I was going to put it in this V but I wanted a better look so I got a paf style cover and drilled it for 12 holes and then I un-screwed all the poles out of the pickup, put the cover on and screwed the poles back on through the cover, pickup stopped being shrill  :wha?: I have no idea way this happened, but I'm glad it did.

^ I might try that with the Detonator... If I'd mess it up I wouldn't really miss it.

It is white with black poles, and the pickguard is white, so I was just going to paint the poles blue with screen printing ink for a nice match to the guitar body if I'd end up using it. I would like less shrill. Maybe screen ink would magically work like the PAF cover?

You can get them from Allparts; allparts dealers, and there's a link on the last page of the GAS thread with links to an ebay seller who sells them for less than allparts - MiddleEarthCrisis made the post with the 'bay linx.

I guess this would be the appropriate thread to discuss what fuzzes you like best with your Tele VI?

I have tried:
Pharaoh
Supercollider
Megalith
Big Muff
Doomidrive

My favorites so far are the Megalith for a smooth sustaining fuzz and the Pharoah into the Doomidrive for more of a cranked/broken amp sound.
Big Muff into Pharaoh was also pretty good at the broken amp sound but with a lot more noise when not playing.
I'm not sure if this makes sense but the Megalith almost sounds too good.
Also, I definitely think the Doomidrive is overqualified for this application and may replace it with something else.

I am thinking of trying the TAFM or maybe something else from MountainKing.
Any suggestions?

Kills with superfuzz type fuzzes to me. Also.. Fuzzhugger great wall, the mellowtone electric apple but then everything sounds good through that.. sounds great with a Wolf computer too.

Haha, so envy with your fuzz collection, MEC... :poke:

Here's pics of the Squier I'm getting ready to Mudfuzz. Gotta sell some of my unused stuff first if I'm going to buy it off ebay... I called the local shop Monday @ the neck + alum nut, but there's no 'free Les Paulz' money in it, so I haven't heard a word. :grumpy:

Is this bridge going to work, or am I going to need the barrel-type bridge?

Should work better, should, you might need to get a set of six small barrel ones if those wound go back far enough, not sure if they would retro fit or not though, but that would be a last ditch vs getting a new bridge.

Also I really dig that color :thumb:

Here are the strings you'll need:

Image

You may have to widen the groove so the low "E"(90) will sit right. You'll definitely have to widen the grooves on the nut for this too.

Confession: The 90 gauge string was a little heavy for my taste so I took it off and moved all the strings up and added a 18 for the high "E"
I use:
74
54
42
30
20
18

I tune to "E" an octave down from standard and it plays more like a super heavy Baritone than a Bass :dodgeseggs: :getskickedoutofclub:.

What tuning do you use Mudfuzz?
