well after reading so many discussions on tone, I would think that people generally agree that "tone" is a short version "good tone". while there are many different sounds available to the guitar player, tone always comes back to two things, signal to noise ratio, sustain. people dont really use that as the definition but if you look at what they like and why they like it. these are the only constants in every situation. on the flipside, a squire > ds-1 > fender frontman 15r is SHIT TONE. its a fact. go try it. now you understand. anyway its a real word and we dont need to laugh at people who use it. just laugh at people who abuse it. like tag and his 1,843,784 dumbles

not entirely. the other constant in discussions of "tone" is the relative distribution of harmonic content. your Telecaster players and Gretsch types will opine endlessly on "twang," its various permutations, and how it's best produced/expressed. check out the 15-minute comparo videos of TV Jones Dynasonics vs. Seymour Duncan Dynas sometime. P90 players are a little UN of their own, with a million boutique makers each of whom someone proclaims the bestest EVER. and everybody's got their own little fuss about where they want their notch in the mids of their PAFs to be, and whether it's a bump or a cut. and the distribution question is where it inevitably bogs down, because you can't argue with someone else's ears.
