The Hockey Thread
So this forum seems to be populated by geeks that got beat up by jocks, but the inclusion of a soccer thread leads me to believe that there is room for some sports love.
I'm not a jock,...I'm a geek,...but I friggin love Hockey. The 2010-2011 season is coming up in less than a month. I'm wondering who the resident puckheads are.
My family grew up in Pottstown PA so the result is,...I'm a Flyers fan,...and I have followed them since the Line of Doom days (Lindros,...LeClair,...Renberg) since high school. This is no post SC Final bandwagon thing. We were close but I knew it was the Blackhawks year,...the Flyers were too inconsistent to win the SC last year,...but they have a great team this year and I have high hopes.
For the most part everybody loves to hate the Flyers,...and I'm used to that so derogatory remarks are all but ignored. The team I hate? The Penguins of course. It used to be Fuck Sidney Crosby,...but he is starting to whine a lot less so now it's just a cross state thing.
I don't live in the market so I have to pay to get games. When I had cable I had NHL Center Ice,...but know that I have a computer and no cable I go through NHL Gamecenter.
There is a local WHL team here as well,...the Spokane Chiefs. A few years ago they won the Canadian Hockey League championship,...the Memorial Cup (it's a juniors title and the CHL consists of the Western Hockey League, the Ontario Hockey League and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League) which they promptly broke after receiving.

Anyway,...I go watch these guys play from time to time.
Getting antsy for the season to start. Own up if you are a hockey fan.

Hockey is one of the only sports along with baseball i can watch. Being from Jersey i love the devils and hate the rangers with all my heart. My buddy just won 20 preseason tickets with his brother and two friends in a contest on the devils site by all wearing devils shirts in front of Mt Rushmore haha. off topic but my girlfriends grandma and aunt live in pottstown and she was born there.

Re: The Hockey Thread
Yeah I'm not a big Rags fan either,...especially that chucklehead Sean Avery.
I've got a ton of respect for Marty Broduer. I know that some people say Roy was the greatest,...but in my book there's no argument,...Brodeur is the best.
As to you derail,...my wife actually works with a girl that was born in Pottstown,...her family is LDS though and moved to Utah when she was young. FWIW I grew up in Virginia Beach but for some reason always felt more connected to the Philly area than Norfolk or DC. I'm not Caps fan that's for sure.
I do like the Canucks as my Western Conference team of choice.
You buddy is lucky. I've never been to a Flyers game but there is always an annual beginning season trip to the west coast for them. I may try to make it up to Vancouver when they come out this way sometime in the next couple of seasons. My cousin still lives in Philly (a few blocks north of Pat's/Geno's) so I may pay her a visit sometime and try to catch a home game or two. It's on the list.

Yeah I still havent gotten to a Devils home game since the move to their new arena between tickets being crazy expensive and having a pedal habit and work i usually end up watching on t.v (good thing i deliver pizza for a sports bar/restaurant haha) I may try and get a spot for one of the games he has tickets for but hell prob have to split them up between his brother and his friends too. I just checked out the schedule again and they are playing the Flyers here in jersey on the 28th for the preseason maybe ill try and get to that game for both of us.

I for one am very, very happy that summer is essentially over, only one month to hockey season. GO CANUCKS GO! One of my friends has season's tickets, so I'll probably go to half a dozen games or so this season.

Re: The Hockey Thread
I grew up in NC, and there was no hockey team anywhere near us. So I randomly choose the Devils as my team. I liked the logo.
I was finishing up college in Raleigh right when the Hurricanes got franchised. So I got into the Canes as well. I still have a big-ass Battaglia jersey that I break out sometimes when watching hockey with the neighbors.
I saw a ton of Hurricanes home games because a buddy's employer had fantastic season tickets that nobody every wanted, so we went all the time. We got four tickets each time, so we'd sell the extra two in the parking lot for beer money. They were great seats (face value of $80), and we'd sell them for $40 each, which was pretty good nothing.
So yeah, I'm pretty much a Devils fan primarily, and a Hurricanes fan as a close second.

Re: The Hockey Thread
I've lived in New England my whole life, so grew up a huge Bruins fan. They were exciting and fun to watch in the 80s and early 90s. Late 90's I just completely gave up on them, having such a cheapskate scumbag owner. Last couple years, I've gotten back into them, as the new rules with the salary cap and minimum salary means that our cheapskate owner can't ruin the team too much any more. I am über-pumped for this upcoming season with all the young talent the B's have, especially Krejci, Lucic, Rask and Seguin
oh, and if anyone even mentions the '10 playoffs to me, I'm going to start breaking furniture, so please don't.

As a Flyers fan it is my nature to want to rub it in,...but I'm trying to break that image that Philadelphia fans are scum,...so in order to resist I give you this.

I can't believe the Bruins drew the Habs for the first round, the one team they match up worst against. God, I hate the Habs with every fiber of my being.

Chicago Blackhawks my whole life. Last year was so awesome that they finally won the Stanley Cup! Trust me, we deserved it...after all I am also a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan.
This year we kinda looked like shit. I can't believe we even made the playoffs, but I would have to think we'll get blown outta the 1st round.

Re: The Hockey Thread
Once the playoffs start anything can happen.
The Habs/Bruins matchup ought to be a barn burner,...especially considering the Chara/Pacioretty (spelling?) incident.

First time I've seen this, it's hilarious! Now I want that to happen to the Stanley Cup this year.
Being eurotrash I don't feel too connected to a team. However after my trip to Anaheim last year I pretty much favor the Ducks. I love that big line of Getzlaf, Ryan and Perry followed by that Finnish duo of Koivu and Selanne (why they would get Jason Blake on that awful contract is still beyond me). Hopefully Emery's injury is indeed minor and he can play, I don't trust Dan Ellis enough in what should be close games against the Predators.
Also looking forward to the Bruins-Habs matchup, those games are always intense. That's the only series in the East that gets me excited. Curious to see if the Caps will be upset again this year, if they do they'll be the new San Jose Sharks.
It's a shame L.A. lost Kopitar, they're a pretty fun team to watch. Canucks-Blackhawks should be good, interested to see how trading away all their non-top guys pans out for the Hawks.
Looks like ESPN America is slotting 2 live games a day, one East and one West, fun times ahead.
