I'd like to grant Elban the favor of suspended disbelief, since, from all that I know, Elban's been a standout trader and a really nice guy the past years he's been around. Like - for exxample - the good traders thread has proved.

Agreed. I myself have had a good and fair trade with him, and have exchanged Facebook messages once in a while. Always seemed like a nice guy to me. So I doubt that this will not be resolvable.
