I used to play MTG a tiny bit..but was never very good..I have a black deck somewhere around here cant remember any of the specific cards I had..but the 'strategy' of the deck was forcing the opponent to discard cards..
That shit got like HUGE when I was a senior in high school (1995). I got into it pretty big time, as one of my bud's dad owned the local comic book shop. That was back when the current printing was the "Unlimited" set, which was a reprint of Beta but with white borders.
I recall back then that THE hot card from that set was the Shivan Dragon. It took me forever to get one organically (not buying it out of the display case), and in the process I ended up with a buttload of Sengir Vampire and Seraph Angel cards, which were really bad-ass (at the time).
My friends and I used to challenge each other to limit the decks as being really small. We all ended up with 5-color decks with a limit of 50-ish cards. It's only workable if you have a LOT of the dual-land cards, which were also really hot items back then and not cheap.
I haven't played since the end of my senior year, and I sold my whole collection (a couple thousand cards) as my very first transaction on eBay back in 1997. I was in college and needed the money (for beer).

I remembered, I remembered! The first one I got, and used the most, was the Mercandian Masques set. Had some cool stuff in it. I don't remember how to play at all however.
