good cities to busk.

Post by midi_in »

I'm in a two piece(drums and bass) and we play something like lofi-noise-punk-garage-rock...whatever...ROCK 'N ROLL. anyway. People in Florida have been quite accepting of our music, but the Law isnt. apparently playing publicly in FL is considered panhandling. and we get booted out of most everywhere, luckily without being handed citations. i cant even play nice sweet ukulele songs without being hassled. The police in FL hate art.

What I'm wondering is, does anyone know of some accepting cities/city areas to busk. I'll be traveling throughout the US in a week or two. Maybe your town is a good place to preform?

Honestly, I'm gonna play anywhere i want, regardless of what the law says. It's my right. I just would like to know places where people actually like street artists and where people are giving and supportive. I'd like to make enough money for gas to get to the next stop.

Specifics would be nice, like what part of the city to play, what part NOT to, nice public areas where people gather, malls, parks, fountain side, whatever. even cafes or small venues that would accept us with out us having to pay.

Your recommendations would be so much appreciated!

No one gets bothered in Richmond for it. Whether it's a dulcimer player, bucket drummers, or Gull...seems to be okay.

i was gonna say Seattle, but my working knowledge of such there was so long ago people will mock me if i say when.

you can get away with it along Market Street in downtown San Francisco, but it's not a very happy environment; stay inside of Fifth Street, and keep away from the Civic Center area, which is a locus of crime.

i dunno about san fran. or any large city areas in california. i've heard that cali-youngins are quite the hecklers and shit talkers? i dunno, maybe not...but i'd like to avoid situations like that.

THANKS GUYS! KEEP 'EM COMING! good locations are places i probably want to hang around for a few days.

Seattle as a whole is pretty busk-friendly, at least in my experience. Pike's Place is good, Gasworks Park, the entirety of the U District...

Downtown San Diego, especially the Gaslamp district, is a good place to busk. The cops don't care at all, and you can make some good money from the people barhopping. Good luck to you sir!

It's definitely dirty...but dangerous...not too bad. People get robbed every know and then in the school campus area, but it's not too terrible beside that. Depends on where you are of course. I live close to campus so I've been fine.

It's funny because people from Cali say the same thing about "youngsters" from the south or east.

California is full of sunny towns where you can hang around, Santa Barbara or San Diego or San Fran are all good bets.

it used to be the case that you needed a permit--which IIRC was free, but you had to audition so they knew you weren't total shit--to play in Pike Place Market. i don't know if this is true any more.

In the actual market I'm pretty sure you do, but as far as I know you can busk like 50 feet from the entrance and it's all good.
