I asked them in an email if I should learn any cover songs to bring with me. Haven't heard back yet. And, I have heard some of the other guitarists solo stuff. It's pretty typical Indie (or since it seems i have to specify exactly what I mean within indie here... Folkish Alterna Blues Rock).

As to Post Metal being called its own thing. It is. Post Metal has just been a more widely used term, and it makes sense since it is derivative of metal (or progressive metal, doom metal, sludge metal, black metal, etc. in specific). It is also called "Steel" - a name which I and I think most people just find pretty lame. And also Metalgaze - which is ok I guess... Idk... (I think Metalgaze isn't quite right though, it leads to a specific perception of the sound of post metal)

You could learn some The Hold Steady tunes. They're mostly just jugging out power chords. In fact, that might be too easy.

This may take a while... If you really want - or if several people are interested - I'll write up an article on the evolution of classification in music. I've been thinking about writing a book on it, but I'm not sure if I'd ever actually finish it. I have a tendency to write the beginnings of a book and then just set it aside and never know what to do when I go back to it.

Wasn't hardcore supposed to be a combination of metal and punk? And really fast metal was called thrash, but then it was called speed metal? Now The combination of hardcore and metal is metalcore? Where does it end?!?!???!!! That's where it seems genres can be restricting, when bands tend to pigeonhole themselves into too specific formulas for making music. Some simple minded idiots then think that because of that "OMG A11 G3NREZ r TEH 5UcHzOrZ!!!" *stops self before it turns into a totally unrelated rant*

Ok. It is difficult to explain because most people tend to think of music as kind of a linear map. Like a flow chart. Really it is more like a great 3 dimensional map of gradients. To put it in the simplest terms though (and talking about only the most prominent influences on musical evolution of these genres):

Hardcore is actually a short hand which may refer to Hardcore Punk, or Metallic Hardcore. Hardcore punk is a direct derivative of Punk, whereas Metallic Hardcore is the sister of Metalcore. The addition of core to a genre means it takes influence from Hardcore Punk, typically in the form of harsh or "barked" vocals, but also may include the frequent use and style in the use of certain chords. Now, Metalcore is a result of the influence of Hardcore Punk on Heavy Metal, whereas Metallic Hardcore is the result of the influence of Heavy Metal on Hardcore Punk. Thrash Metal is a result of the influence of Punk on Heavy Metal and with consideration to speed. Speed Metal is the same type of move from Heavy Metal but without the Punk influence. Grindcore is a further extremity of Metallic Hardcore as in Thrash Metal (and Punk) to Black Metal.

Corecore is more of a joke than a genre. It just means really extreme Hardcore (typically of the Metallic variety).

Grindcore is sort what you think hardcore is... hardcore mixed with metal, the actual name grind CAME from Napalm Death explaining what they were doing and the core was stuck on at some point... also in grind blast beats are key Check out Napalm Death and Extreme Noise Terror.

Metalcore from at least when I first came across the term is a again a mix of hardcore and thrashmetal I think Machine Head was the first band I ever saw labeled as such in a mag, although if I was to go by what the description is S.O.D. and C.O.C. were where it started

I'm no expert on the subgenres of rock/metal, but as far as I understand, Hardcore was indeed a hybrid of metal and punk (i.e. "hardcore punk") I'm not familiar with bands that would fit this classification..

Metalcore to me is more 'punk-ish' metal, but generally with more emphasis on melodic vocals/less gutteral screamed vocals...
tons of examples of these from 2000-2005, not as many lately it seems...

yea there are alot of -cores that have been devised...grindcore being one of the most recent/most maligned classifications.
The most well-known and probably most mocked examples is the band Waking the Cadaver..there are several parody videos of them (because the 'pig squeal' vocals make it almost impossible to understand any of the lyrics)
