no, actually simple is more objective as complex because there is a definitive baseline of simplicity, as you said yourself. nothing. its as much a self imposed restriction as a blank canvas is to an artist, or complexity. its as limiting as any defining of terms, and is therefore irrelevant.

you're changing it by making it mean subtlety by your logic. which is wrong, on top of the fact that your logic is flawed.

and listing the definitions of simple just hurt your argument. not once did it mention anything relating to subtlety. and its not inherently stupid since it doesn't necessarily mean stupid, and having it listed as it's last, aka LEAST COMMON DEFINITION doesn't help either.

no sense in owning the spruce goose if it doesn't fly more than 12 yards :B

Awesome on so many levels. Especially if you're a fellow bassist. :)*

I've played geet for 24 years now,and bass for 22. I find that switching between the 2 leads to great ideas on either instrument. If I come up with a guitar part,I see how it would sound on bass,in a "bassy" manner. I do the same with certain basslines. With bass,I tend to think of it as the mediator between the drums and the guitar. What yr doing,as a bassist,is providing the "glue". Bass wil be all over the new Blue Ghost Factory. And it will be responsible for percussion,"rhythm guitar",some lead, and main riffs/chords. But it will be played as though/sound as though it's a bass. I love chords on bass, btw

As someone with a Sly and the Family Stone avatar, let me say, "Fuck yeah! Larry Graham and slap bass rules."

This is just like a talkbass thread a bunch of dudes arguing about a completely SUBJECTIVE topic.

To answer to post...

IMO electric bass guitar is such a weird instrument because it encompasses a lot of different roles and styles. Coming from a very percussive and rhythmic world of the upright bass and fusing it with the chordal, melodic aspects of guitar. "How to" play correctly I would say would be determined by what you find your role in a particular setting. One thing I do find essential though is being able to glue everything together. From Lemmy to James Jamerson, they keep the music together. My favorite bassist is Joe Lally (Fugazi, Ataxia, solo, etc.) He always plays for the music, which is what any musician should do, especially bass. He mixes strong repetitive grooves, melodies, chords, arpeggios, and genius syncopation. Truly bridges melody and rhythm. I always think of it as a conversation between bass and drums. You have to stay on topic and have things relevant. IMO as well you can't go crazy with effects as a guitar player can. One the drums are present crazy delays and reverbs and really washed out sound on guitar can work, but it is (usually) the duty of the bass to keep it locked down.

One gripe I do have is guitarists style with a pick, it's always so scratchy. On bass, you have to push and dig in with a pick, not strum and glide.

Bassists to look into:
Joe Lally - arpeggios, grooves, chords
Jaco Pastorius - melody, melody, groove
Juan Alderete - keeping it locked with a lot of chaos around, melody, syncopation, grooves
Holger Czukay - SYNCOPATION, groove
Colin Greenwood - groove, syncopation, melody
Brian Cook - chords, pick technique

Enjoy the instrument! Most fun to me!
