gonna be building a pc, anyone wanna help me?

Post by htsamurai »

basically to make a long story short I love computer gaming. like a lot.
So I'm investing into this stuff

http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/Publi ... r=16624666

except I'll probably go with this motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 20870a-g54

I've never built a pc before, this list was compiled by a few friends of mine in canada and the UK

can anyone link me to a guide or wanna walk me through the building process? I'll probably be ordering parts either today or tomorrow :D

I'm asking them for help as well but I'd like to get a couple of responses and go from there in case someone misses something or someone has a better way of doing something, ya know?

As far as assembly, I generally install my hard drives and disc drives first. They can sometimes be a pain to get in with the mother board installed.
Then I put in the power supply, so I don't have to work around the motherboard.
Then motherboard.
The I go: processor, ram, video card, any other pci cards.
Then wire it up.

You could wire it as you go, if you think it's not going to get in the way.

Don't forget thermal paste. I thought it would, but my processor didn't come with any.

Also, you can get a 1GB 256-bit (instead of 128) 9800GT for just a little more than the current card on that list.

I have a GTS250 and the 9800GT is widely said to have equal performance to it. You might want to check it out :idk:

And don't forget crap like SATA cables. Also you might want a CD/DVD drive unless I missed it or you already have one.

My little brother is a wiz, he built himself a sick PC not too long ago. I'll ask him.

If you want to do music on it, it's definitely worth going Intel instead -- tends to be not much more system investment for substantially more performance. You can find DAW benchmarks at ADK Pro Audio's site. Anandtech et al. do good benchmarks for general purposes, but they don't all translate to music apps.

Fooman assembles the same way I do...just seems to be the best method, and yeah...dont forget thermal paste, sata/other cables, and any adapters you may need.
