If you've never read any David Foster Wallace, I recommend him above just about anyone else right now. "Infinite Jest" is a MONSTER, but worth all 990,000 8-point-font words.

Since we're on Murakami, I just purchased my first one and I will be reading it next:

i'd say that one or the wind up bird chronicle. they're a bit on the longer side, but so worth it.

Thanks, after getting through Atlas Shrugged this shouldn't be too bad.

Wind up bird is a good starting point. His short stories also give you a good idea of his style. He's very entertaining to read but nothing that really sticks in my mind or moves me much. That can be good though.

Yes! I'm reading the Jest now, I'm usually one of those people to read more than one book at once, but now I'm focused on IJ.

DFW is a pleasure to read, he trolls the beginnings of his sentences so hard.

On Murakami, Kafka on the Shore was really good, as was Hard-Boiled Wonderland (though I didn't realize it until close to the end), but the magic realism thing starts to get tiring after a while. About a year ago I became really obsessed with his work and bought a bunch of them, but it seemed like after I finished most of them that I came away with nothing, like there was no substance, and I was just reading words on a page. Idk.

I'm in the middle of The Wind-up Bird Chronicle right now. it's taking a long time for me to get through. I flew through all of the other Murakami books I've read. I really liked Norwegian Wood and Kafka on the Shore. South of the Border, West of the Sun and Sputnik Sweetheart were both good. A Wild Sheep Chase was definitely the weirdest of the ones I've read.

and I just bought the new Andrew Earles book on Hüsker Dü. that one's next.

While you're all reading Kafka on the Shore, I'm reading Kafka. The Penal Colony to be exact.

I also meant to read Lord Jim again, but that's not going to happen any time soon. Joseph Conrad is awesome but his writing is dense that it's not something to take up lightly.

I decided to go back through and re-read all of my Shakespeare. I'm only reading them a scene or two a night so I can really digest them. I'm reading the Merchant of Venice right now.

Whoa. That's fucked up. It is an important work because of, not in spite of, the antisemitism.
