so, Vinnie, are you using a different compressor now, and if so what? i can see how the PT would be less than optimal for bass; i'm working out how to get what i want from it for guitar, but you'd really need more attack/decay control for bass (i also play bass sometimes).

Honestly, I LERVE my Philosopher's Tone. But then again, I have a really bright, high-mid-y tone for a bassist. I really don't care about the crazy sub-lows.

i don't think most people have mixed a bass (or a band, for that matter) through, say, a 1/3 octave graphic EQ and paid attention to where the frequencies actually occur, and what is actually happening at e.g. 60Hz.

Well, it's supposed to be mixed in the low-mids. Unfortunately, almost every sound guy I've ever worked with never learned this lesson, and considered the bass to be part of the drum kit. There was one sound guy that was awesome, and actually had the guitarist clank away on my bass while he had me walk the room with him, and he asked ME whether I liked the bass tone. It was awesome

To be clear are we talking bass TONE as in your clean or "base" tone, or are we talking with effects. Because pitch shifting and octave effects are my favorite. I love me some crazy dynamic range and messing with the hierarchy of pitches for an EFFECT. Elaborate Mudfuzz.

Mainly that you should stay in the low mids range, I don't like to have the kick lower then me but have to kick have more mids and have the bass and kick overlap at times, makes for a bigger sound. Also If I need to I have a bass tuned to low low C which is a 7th under a normal low B, I don't use it much and mostly for noise music but it is a cool sound.

Yes. As of late I've been using a mixture of my amp and a Fulltone BD for my OD sounds. I typically playing clean on 7. Throw it up to 10 for some spank, pedal throws into od. And I was thinking the blend on the PT wouldn't hurt. But I lost the dynamic range I needed. So for sustain I just turn my amp up more.

I shot out the PT vs. the Boss CS-2 for what I wanted for a over the top singing boost. Something about the CS-2 which is technically probably less quality makes the CS-2 sing to me. Maybe it's the nasty build or the presence of an attack knob.

...clipping top boost = best thing there is, for a bassist. I'm ready to forget for good about all low boosts as llong as I can get a crunchy top boost and trebly crispies for breakfast. And THEN some fuzzzzzz. so yeah, wellcome aboard.
