Has this ever happened to you?

Post by Jero »

I got hit by a car while riding my bike to work today. Drivers fault.

On the way to the hospital (think I'm ok for the most part)

Will update when I return.

That sucks dude. :(
I'm lucky enough this hasn't happened to me yet, but I've seen it happen to lots of people.
I hope you're alright.

My town is shitty for bikes. I've been hit twice.

The first was relatively minor. The car was slowly exiting a parking lot and not looking. It coasted right into me. Scratched the bike a little but otherwise no big deal.

About a week later I was riding to work. I was on a long straightaway, picking up speed. An SUV ahead of me suddenly decided to turn right without looking. I had enough time to think "Oh no no no no" before I hit the side of the vehicle. Flew off my bike. Over the hood. Bounced twice. Got up quite a little shaken and mostly embarrassed for having eaten it in front of heavy traffic.

I was fine. Very lucky considering what happened.* A police officer was actually several cars behind the one who hit me, and checked to see if I was ok. Another officer soon showed up to make the report. The driver was charged (thankfully) and her insurance company helped pay for my new bike.

So yeah, watch out for cyclists when you're driving. And wear helmets when you're riding. I wasn't wearing a helmet when this happened (again, I was very lucky) but you can be damn sure I wear one now.

I recently spent a year unemployed, and as such I did a lot of walking. It was nice, I lost a bunch of weight and felt really good physically, etc. But I live near a large hospital so every day was fraught with danger if I ventured toward the busier streets (often). Best I can tell almost everybody pays attention to pedestrians, which is really nice and all, unless they drive a Toyota Prius of course. I almost got ran over several times, and each time was a god damn Prius. Not the same guy, no. Different one each time, but this was consistent. This theory was later proven completely correct when a dude at work bought one and instantly turned from conscientious driver into Dick Of The Year (On Wheels). I even asked him "did you drive this insane before owning a Prius?" "Nope!" I'm all for helping the environment but FUCK THOSE CARS.

wow, i wonder if they think that because they're helping the environment they can stop worrying about driving safely. i can see them screaming 'fuck safety, i'm reducing my carbon footprint!'

i hope you're okay jero!

Totally sucks! I really sorry that happen and I hope you end up being fine. I've seen that happen in my city before, happens a lot here actually... You mix a city full of greeners and such and have a large pickup truck love'n bike hate'n population that lives in all the redneck towns that surround it and you can guess what happens... I was just old a story about a truck stopping right in front of a cyclist and the cyclist ended up in the truck bed... and no it was not a accident :picard:

Well I got scraped a bunch of times but I've never really had any real damage.

I have however been hit right in the middle of my bike from the right by another bike which was going about 25 mph. It hurt.

Hope you get better soon
