I'd say several hundred, if not above 1,000. My friend is very diligent at studying Kanji; he knows 600 or so. He can read a lot of video game text, and can write those Kanji, as far as I know. When he knows a few hundred more, he'll likely be able to completely read Japanese video games.

Granted, when I say he knows 600, I mean it. He can truly pick them out and provide yomigana for them. You really have to master Kanji at a basic level and then be able to retain about a thousand before seeing major results. Hope this helps!

It is a chinese character in the Japanese language, I know it sounds stupid but that's just the way it it, it's like the word cafe, it's French but we still use it in English (cafe means coffe in english)

well said.

so basically the meaning of 本 in Chinese & Japanese share a lot in common.
i would not believe they are stupid enough to put "book" on a wah pedal, not in any way i can relate it to... :idk:
BUT to have the meaning of "main", "true" or "real", you still require to use it with another word to make up the meaning.

so am I the only asian kid that love fuzz? :erm:

Do you think it's popular for Japanese kids to get English letters tattooed on them?

This would actually not surprise me at all, given how Japanese music has an average of 13.49 random mangled English words per song...
