Anyone else.....

Post by Monkeyboard »

...have permanent writers' block?

I can honestly never get a single word on paper. No matter what I try (even not trying) I never get any kind of inspiration and if I do (very seldomly) it manifests itself in the form of a short poem which makes me cringe the next morning.

It's a right pain.

Anybody else share my trouble?

In terms of lyrics? That can be a pain. My bandmate and I often get around that by writing the music of our songs first. Then he scat-sings melodies over the top, and we decipher what we think he might have said, if he had meant to sing real words. More often than not, it works.
I'm more like a mids-ist than a bassist.

I do. It's been a problem for me all through school and into the workplace. It sometimes takes me a half-hour to compose a two-paragraph e-mail.

But I'm getting better at it (i.e. just writing more succinctly and not trying to embellish anything).
:joy: things to do, things to re-do :omg:

I used to write, but since i started to use my creativity for writing music, i couldn't write anything else than essays for school anymore :)

Freewrite! Just ramble/babble/blurb, just to get SOMETHING out. That's usually how I break it. Open up Vi and just go. No stopping, just go.

^thi...

damn, I just can't finish that thought...

What are you trying to write and why? (and when?) That makes a big difference
I'll sit and look at a blank screen for a month, but if I have a deadline, it gets done (using Eric!'s approach, just puke it all down and then edit what you've got).
I'm a great editor...

i totally concur. i can never write under any circumstances. although creative writing is more difficult than analytical, it's all pretty hard to me.

writing poetry is the worst. lately i've taken to writing down short lines whenever i can think of them. when i get enough i'll try to compost them down into something.

I am terrible at writing lyrics, but I am pretty good with any type of technical, historical, etc. non-fiction writing.

I've had a few, the longest lasted for about six months in which time nothing worthwhile got it's way on paper and/ or tape. Usually I just need to get out, if disciplined working hours and writing doesn't do the trick.

Try to change the work place. Or take the work out, actually out - go and try to write in different locations to do the writing. Go to a park if You can handle the curious people that come ask questions. Who knows, You might catch a bird if You follow my lead. It's worth a try, but if it doesn't try different places. Graveyards. forests, roof tops, ports, pubs, libraries, hospitals, the city hall... whatever it is that seems enough alienating if the comfortableness doesn't release Your cramp.
