I saw King Gizzard with a full orchestra in CO Springs earlier this month. Their new album is good and all but seeing Dragon with an orchestra backing was sick as fuck. It's easy to hate on the Grateful Dead-esque fan base but I had so much fun and everyone was very pleasant to be around. Definitely going again next time they come around.

Otherwise CO Modular Society has some dungeon synth shows coming up? Excited.

speaking as an old Dead fan, the Gizzard people are less awful. apparently the nitrous vendors can’t sell that shit at Gizz shows, which puts them one up. i don’t care for the music, though.

i'm hardly seeing anything so far this year. i've only had 6 shows lined up, and that includes one from January. i've never seen a year this bad since COVID.

Seeing Dashboard Confessional (opening for Goo Goo Dolls, but for me, DC is the draw here) next weekend

Have always wanted to but it never lined up

I think in the very early 2000s he/they were one of the most unique live acts on the planet due to the near-religious level of audience participation, and that's probably not hitting now that the main audience demo is 40+, but hey, I'll take 'em washed over not at all, because I do not possess a time machine

i have Sunn O))) next Saturday in Philly and They Are Gutting A Body Of Water in Richmond next Thursday for only $16(!). then there’s a shoegaze thing in Brooklyn with Nothing, Chapterhouse, and Hum in May, the Mekons in Baltimore in June, and Sugar in October. so the shows i have are good, but there’s fewer artists i care about touring this year.

Seriously tempted to go see The Bug Club. They're inexplicably playing not too far from me in the not too distant future.

enjoyed Sunn O))), but would have liked it more if i knew in advance that all they’d do is hit extremely distorted chords through octave dividers and hold them for minutes at a time with occasional blasts of treble feedback. as it was i got a bit restless 2/3 of the way through.

i found some great inexpensive earplugs at CVS for the show called Alpine Partyplugs (no connection to US Alpine Audio). they come with three sizes of ear canal plugs and a pair of -19 dB audio attenuating inserts that kill volume rather than frequency range (for the most part). i found the Medium plugs most comfortable, and my ears were shockingly unscathed when i got out of the show which was the loudest thing i’ve seen since MBV in 2008…my entire body resonated at some point. HIGHLY recommended if you want to keep your hearing, 1000% better than foam plugs.

You’re not kidding about the volume for MBV for that early revival era. They were loud with the very effective “shooter” style plugs they gave out at the door. I can’t imagine without. “You Made Me Realise” was punishing even with them, but it let you feel as they found all the nodes of the room and shook them without concussing out first. They sounded fantastic, besides loud.

Did you catch David Torn opening for Sunn O))? I haven’t had a chance to check his latest.

there was no opener. if i'd expected Torn i'd have been upset. the show was billed as "an evening with" in the AXS email. i'm OK with that because after driving 350 miles to get there i like being out the door by 10:30.

i didn't wear plugs for MBV because i "wanted to get the full experience." my ears rang for seven days, and i was pretty sure i'd fucked them for good.
