Nasty, destructive fuzz for bass vi

Post by Bearstripes »

Yooooooo! Haven’t posted here in a looong minute but it’s dope to see the community is still kickin and some familiar names. Did the whole I have a hundred pedals so now I need to stop playing guitars and cover my desk with synths and samplers.

Now I’m back on the strings. Doin a bass vi 2 piece with an old homie and am trying to get the special sound I’m looking for.

I’m thinkin maybe a pll but am unsure what too look at besides the eqd one. Been outta the scene so long that I don’t know what to look for and no idea where. So I’m just lookin for yalls suggestions cause, you know, I love fuzz.

Currently running a boss od3-malekko diabolik-fuzzwar clone- and an ssbs mini. Stacking them can get wild and I have a pitch factor and some modulation smashed between them so I can get wild sounds. Planning on adding but am Willing and would rather (to save space) to replace some dirt if y’all got something that fills the bill.

But yea…

Hi!
Copilot orbit is a good option for that type of thing, also the last gasp tone axe.. but the eqd does have a lot of control… but I’ve never tried one.. chaotic.. I always thought the dwarfcraft great destroyer was one of the best… but I don’t go for crazy stuff anymore… I sold off most of my crazy fuzzes.. I still have some last gasp stuff for when I need go into the crazy and the broken sounds..

A number of the folks who bought these use them for bass, and newer ones have more controls than the ones in this old demo.

As someone who played Bass VI in a band exclusively for a few years: I think fuzz for Bass VI is not an easy task because of the wide tonal range of the instrument. In my experience, classics like Big Muff and Fuzz Face worked well, Wooly Mammoth and HM-2 (as two a little bit nastier examples), too. My favourite for reeeally nasty super heavy fuzz was my Ibanez Standard Fuzz, though. Good thing there's a Fredric Effects clone of it (https://www.fredric.co.uk/standard-fuzz-machine) and also the Solid Gold FX 76 seems to be based on it. The Standard Fuzz has a huge low end, a very pronounced octave up in higher registers and mad amounts of fuzz. It's similar to a Super Fuzz but thicker and less chaotic.
Also I can recommemd to have a look at Berlin based KMA Machines. They build very sophisticated EQ circuits in most of their pedals which is usually not so much my cup of tea but can be very helpful with a Bass VI. Good choice on the Pitch Factor btw. 👍

Check out the Fuzzhugger Doom Bloom. Gets crazy, but has the bottom end as well as the note clarity on more complex chords.

I know I've seen derision thrown at fuzz & distortion circuits with a clean blend control in the past, but for low end translation and/or stacking I find some blend can make me very happy indeed.

I'll be my usual broken record (which Jero et al can attest was right!): Test Pattern/Pest Tattern. Get one, make one. Schematics available.

Want to destroy the worlds? It's all there.

Works wonders on my Bass VI as well as anything else.

Thank you, drive through.
