making your own cd sleeves, labels, etc.

Post by aussy »

Band wants to up the anti on their CD production
Lots of 'indie' bands have put out some very creative, good looking, handcrafted products
I was wondering if there are some websites out there with tutorials, galleries, resources, links, etc.

You can go the Chariot route.
Step 1) Get some rubber stamps made (or make them yourself).
Step 2) Get some blank paper cd sleeves
Step 3) Hand stamp all them janks.

Some vids of The Chariot hammering down on 25,000 cds this way.

You could purchase blank sleeves and a Gocco mini-screenprinter (sadly, they're out of production, but you could probably find one on e-bay...

For printing the paper cover that go inside the CD case, I have, in the past, just used Powerpoint to print images/text, making sure to size it to fit in the little prongs inside the CD case.
(sorry for the un-technical terminology...not sure what to actually call the things  )

If you have photo printing supplies, maybe you could make "one-of-a-kind" inserts by placing random things on the photo paper and using different exposure times and shit...

In that case, I'd be lazy and just print a tracklisting that I'd tape/glue to the back or fold up and place in the tray...

If you can make a stamp for your band name (purchase or make a lino-cut), that could be an option... Or maybe make some connections with a local screen-printing company that'll give you a good deal or do it free...

You could make some interesting artwork by doing a lino-cut for that, with all the text already inkjet-printed.

or PAINTER'S TAPE + SPRAY PAINT!

PS: staining paper with tea/coffee's fun...

and I've seen a CD release that was housed in home-made paper (you had to tear it open to access the disc).

PPS: finding materials (cloths, papers, whatever) big enough to staple/tape on the sides while snuggly holding the disc could both make production quicker, cheaper, AND easier.

Fuck a jewel/slim case.

If you are going to go for printed sleeves, labels, etc, use a print/copy shop don't bother to print your own on your home printer, it will end up costing you more in ink then having them done.... trust me....I really know this one...
