I'm a big fan of Phil Dick. Actually, I think his short stories are better. His ideas are great, but not always full enough to carry a novel. Novellas and short stories.

"A Scanner Darkly" is one of my favourite books of all time. It's incredible all the way through. Probably because it's like... hmm... "realistic" sci-fi instead of a lot of outer-space illusory mumbo jumbo. Whatever that means. And it's ALMOST like a mini "Infinite Jest" (by David Foster Wallace) which I also love. Something like "The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch" yes, has a lot of neat ideas, but it's pretty garbled. "Valis" is great... now that one is garbled, but purposely and to nice effect.

"Minority Report" is a brilliantly woven short story of his. BLORCH on the movie, though. Also like "The Golden Man" and "Upon The Dull Earth".

Also, the book "The Philosophical Writings of Philip K. Dick" is a really interesting compilation of Dick's weirder but ingenious essays.

If you haven't already, definitely check out the biography on Dick, "Divine Invasions".
