Overdrive suggestions
I'm using a shitty DOD FX91. It's probably not shitty if you have, you know, a bass guitar, which is what it's made for—but it does not sound great with my V guitar. Anyone have any suggestions as to what I could replace it with?
My main dirts are MXR Distortion+ and DanElectro Fab Tone. (I also have the Digitech Death Metal that I use... ehh... kind of like a compression pedal... but also booster... and ehh... don't ask.) The Dist+ sounds terrific for post-rock-y tremolos (think MONO) as well as soaring open chords (think The Pine), and thick riffs (think My Bloody Valentine). The Fab Tone... well, it's loud.
So what I want is a pedal that will give me a nice and pretty, clean, low-volume (I use the overdrive to bring down the volume, so that the other dirts sound louder) sound, with a bit of bite. Something like the right-panned tremolo thing here https://monoofjapan.bandcamp.com/track/ ... the-snow-3 would be... not terrible.

Re: Overdrive suggestions
if they weren't utterly impossible to find i'd recommend the Mellowtone Singing Tree, or perhaps the Hi Five for a cleaner sound.

Barbershop is the best low gain overdrive ever.
Get a fuck if you want to get into higher gain or crackly fun.

The Pine is a nice reference, love them. Not sure what gear they used, tho. I'd recommend the Fuck OD as well, at least I own that and use it for any number of more or less broken drive sounds. Other JFET-based circuits would probably also get you there, i.e. "amp-like" overdrive with that compression and bite. Seems you have op-amp dirt pretty much covered.

I agree re: the Barbershop. when the Fairfield box went around a few years ago i called it "the Klon Killer."

I actually sort of know those guys. Kurt uses a lps2 with dd5, ce2, mxr dist+ like me, saturn works custom a/b/y pedal, into 2 ts-50bs with one 4x12 ampeg with eminence speakers, and one with stock speakers. Yeah I did listen to that, should have commented in the thread. How is Annie Records I see, they're in my neck of the woods and have been involved with other releases I liked. Also this one! Not as immediately captivating as the Pine but I like the last three songs especially. Might be a grower. Same loose feel but not as intense. The CE-2 is in effect here and there with both, really nice.
What do you mean by LPS2, excuse me. I've seen older pictures of Kurt (think it was him at least) with a Les Paul type guitar.

Re: Overdrive suggestions
what type of amp are you using? that makes a big difference with ODs.

Re: Overdrive suggestions
Another vote for a Fuck. It's a very versatile OD and a Mini would probably work too.
