As an aside, why are North Americans so amazed people in other parts of the world don't know every single little aspect of their culture?

I'm pretty sure that has more to do with how successful they've been in lobbying within a given market for the right to call HFCS "sugar" than an actual difference in ingredients. It's pretty much all HFCS, just some places make them call it that, while others allow the more nebulous and innocent sounding "sugar"
