Re: Modular and why it is so popular right now.
Modular isn't much different than standard synths. It's all the same basic approach, but with more choices and patching options. So it's really as hard as you want to make it.WORMDIRT wrote:Is making soundscapes really that hard with modular? No offense to anyone but I really don't know. Before I bought my Roland D50 and dx7 I really thought vintage digital synth sounds were magical and hard to conjure. When I watch videos of people doing intense modular arpeggiator soundscape type style I can't help but feel like the rig is basically playing itself and they're just slowly opening a filter and people are like "oooooooo wow". I dunno I'm kinda wine buzzed ranting on Christmas Eve.

I think sometimes that I am more like a conductor, coaxing a performance out of the modular but I do know my patching choices gave the orchestra parameters and restraints. I don’t always want to just conduct, I also want to be very hands on so I like touch controllers. I can control timbre, notes, how long gates open, and on and on.Achtane wrote:I feel like that's a lot of electronic musicWORMDIRT wrote:the rig is basically playing itself and they're just slowly opening a filter and people are like "oooooooo wow".
IDK, I feel the way you both do about DJing, especially EDM DJing. Old school hip hop DJing is dope.

Playing a G chord on a guitar in standard tuning is dead easy, but that shit gets me every time.
Same with the simplest of noodlescapes. Something simple and "easy" can be awesome.

True. It isn't the ease that bugs me, it's when cacophony is mistaken for genius.D.o.S. wrote: Making soundscapes isn't that hard with anything

Re: Modular and why it is so popular right now.
I think the main thing with videos of modular is a lot of the work and playing isn't seen because it's all done beforehand. I have seen someone go on stage with a moog mother 32 once though and they legit just played arpeggios and tweak a filter for twenty minutes.WORMDIRT wrote: When I watch videos of people doing intense modular arpeggiator soundscape type style I can't help but feel like the rig is basically playing itself and they're just slowly opening a filter and people are like "oooooooo wow". I personally get irritated by this as well. I have also recorded a patch I made and then later listened to it and realize "wow these one or two aspects are completely ruining it." A living partner I had when I first started told me "I think you are trying to layer too much, I like it when you keep it simple." And I think about that when I listen to patches people make on insta and youtube and such. If they removed one part it'd be reallyyyy cool.WORMDIRT wrote: True. Anyways just some cents from me.

ALL THE CENTS. GHOST HIP REPLACEMENT CENTS.
SPECTRAL MONETARY BASED OPINIONS ARE GO.
i dunno. i have only played modular live like 4 or 5 times, but i tried to actually play bits. i mean, a LOT has to be done beforehand, but i try to have 3 or 4 sections and some variations to switch between.
lol. and. like. ACTUALLY repatch a bit.
one guy i loooove watching live did a From Totally Unpatched set one time. and it was NEAT.

No, it was William Patrick Corgan. It is very easy to get those 2 confused though.
