favorite jazzmaster pickups?
just got gifted a mim fender classic player jazzmaster, it's pretty nice, but i feel like the pickups are lacking. from what i understand the pickups in these guitars aren't even true jazzmaster pickups? i'm curious to hear what people like in their jazzmasters. i'm looking for a proper set of single coil soapbars. budget is almost nonexistent since the guitar was free
i was looking at the fender pure vintage and v-mod jazzmaster pickups because i can get them at a steep discount but i have no experience with them afaik. maybe one of the nicer jazzmasters at work has these pickups but
anyways, what do you y'all think?

I never tried them... but I would give the McNelly a try.

I put an Antiquity I in the bridge and Antiquity II in the neck, I really like that mixture - warms up the bridge and keeps the neck position from getting dark.

Seconding this! Never had the desire to change the pickups in my AV65, they're great!waltdogg wrote:been listening to a bunch of these. thanks. i'm definitely interested in the pure vintages now. the sd antiquities sound pretty good too.repoman wrote:The Fender AVRI/Pure Vintage '65 sound incredible and are like $85 a pair new.

Mascis used antiquities for awhile. They sound awesome.
Novaks are tight, a lot of options.
Lollars always sound great.

Re: favorite jazzmaster pickups?
antiquities and the avri/pure vinatge set seem to be winning followed by lollars, nocaks, etc.
well, i guess i can try just about anything till i'm happy since the guitar cost me nothing.

Re: favorite jazzmaster pickups?
i don't have a JM, but from experience with other Fender formats i'd also lean towards Fender CS pickups or Duncan Antiquities. there's also a guy in England who goes by Mojotone whose pickups look interesting. i played a JMJM with Lollars when the Mascis model was a new thing, and found them a bit too surfy for my tastes.

Re: favorite jazzmaster pickups?
If you want single coil jazzmaster pickup sounds, AV65s are excellent. I have tried Antiquities and some others and for a little while I was able to pretend they sounded better because I spent more money, but I always ultimately realized that's not true.
