“Heavy music” pickup for a strat style guitar

Post by Disarm D'arcy »

To sum the situation up a bit, I want a shredder guitar to allow the fast playing wankery teen me to get technical again.

Thing is I have a Yamaha Pacifica 112J lying around I don’t play or use because it’s my brothers and though it plays well, I dislike the sound.

Because it plays so well and isn’t used right now, this could be the perfect base for a shredder. I have decided on getting a single bridge humbucker pickguard for it.

And now, I need to find the appropriate humbucker pickup for it. A decade ago, back when I enjoyed playing Metallica and Iron Maiden riffs, I remember being very happy with a Seymour Duncan SH4. However, I would like something that could nail these tones AND get a little heavier to riff out to some more modern metal which means definition is important (I remember the BK Nailbomb was a thing back in the day?). It would also be nice if it get achieve some interesting results with a big muff, which is what I might use this guitar for besides my teenage wankery.

What do you peeps recommend?

I keep a hot rail in the bridge of my strat and it's honestly great for heavier stuff. I play in a punk band on the side and it basically stays on so I can cut through on the highs. I'm not a fan of the tone on the low end, but that's mostly because it's bridge position.

Does the BLK/TRI Yeti ( http://www.blktri.com/product/yeti ) sound like something you might want? If so, I have one for sale for $90 USD, and I'm going to be in Paris at the end of the month, so I could bring it with me and ship it from France if you want. I'm happy to include shipping in that price if I'm shipping from the same country. See my B/S/T thread for a picture ( viewtopic.php?f=44&t=60432 ) and shoot me a message if interested.

Really? That was a serious suggestion and I like them for a "generic heavy music" sound.

I know I had one in a stray during my Corgan days as a youngster but it didn’t do it for me... something weird with how it responded. :idk:

Also kinda intrigued as to the BKP Holy Diver, but I've never played one.
Dimarzio Super Distortions are fucking rad too.
And Seymour Duncan Distortions.

I just got a lace finger burner from Amazon for like $80, I think they are still in that range. I love how they are voiced, really attack heavy if you want definition. A really solid option to consider
