godspeed you black emperor guitar sound on lift your skinny

Post by noisefield »

Hi

this subject have been discuss some time but i can't find an answer that satisfies me

i really like the sound of the guitar with the kind of breakup sounds (sound break up randomly) they often have in this album

i know that in 2000 a lot of boutique pedals didn't exist so how they do that kind of sounds ?
is it just delay/reverb into fuzz ? or more than that.

Could you link to a specific part of one of the tracks? That whole album has a lot of different textures in it and it's hard to guess which parts you mean.

hi !

so in this video sounds are at about 11:30 the guitar in center right and after at about 11:38 we can better hear it
after at about 33:54 center right
after the guitar at center left at about 35:50
then the guitar center right at 52:57 and we can hear it better at 54:31
at 1:05

finally most at the center right guitar saturated sounds

are you sure...
i think the "break sounds" don't just come from a distortion and a reverb there is more than that no ?

you are thinking about this way too hard. pretty much what ognoy said is correct. back then they used mostly boss and other 'big brand' stuff into really simple amp setups. It wasn't until later that they switched over to other things, but even now a lot of their members still use that stuff. watch any of their old shows or listen to their live recordings. Seriously, it isn't that complicated. Back then they used incredibly minimal amount of gear. They played loud, they played hard, and they played to riot

Did a quick Google search, and found this in an old thread at offsetguitars:

"effects:

Roger uses an Ernie Ball volume pedal, as well as Boss GE-7 and Boss RV-3 effects pedals.

Thierry sometimes uses a violin bow on his bass. Occasionally he uses a Boss PN-2 for bass tremolo.

Mauro does not use any effects onstage.

Dave has used a Pro Co Turbo RAT and a Pro Co RAT2, as well as a Boss DD-3, Boss RV-3, Boss CS-2, and a Boss PN-2. He also uses a Morley Volume-Wah Pedal and possibly an Electro Harmonix Electric Mistress. The guitar player has also been seen using a Mini-Disk player to broadcast some of the monologues, as well as using a screwdriver and violin bow on his guitar strings similar to the way Efrim does. Recently Dave was seen using a SustainPunch Creamy Dreamer, and an original Digitech Whammy WH-1.

Norsola has been seen with a volume pedal (possibly a Morley PVO). At least one person has reported her using a Boss RV-3. Recently she was using an Ernie Ball volume pedal and a Boss RV-3 reverb pedal.

Sophie has been seen using a Boss GT-3 multi-effects unit, and an Ernie Ball volume pedal.

Efrim uses a Boss GE-7 and Boss TR-2. He uses a volume pedal (possibly an Ernie Ball or Morley), along with a Maestro Fuzzstain, and Boss PSM-5 power supply. If that were not enough, he also uses an unknown green colored pedal and an old Boss multi-effects unit that he only uses for distortion. We cannot forget to mention that he operates the tape deck for the monologues, and his excellent skills with a screwdriver on the guitar strings! Recently it appears that he may be using a Z.Vex Tremolo Probe & Super Hard On, as well as a Line 6 DL-4, and a vintage Mutron Phasor."

And a lot of Ampeg V4s.

GY!BEs sound has a lot more to do with how they play, their arrangements and the fact that they're 8-9 people on stage playing really loud and really well together, than what pedals they're using.

They could have used an all currently-in-production Boss-board and you wouldn't have noticed.

Indeed!

I remember glancing over their setup when I saw them two years ago or so, but all I can remember is that there was a Drone Commander, a CT5, a Barbershop and a Sunny Day Delay. The rest was pretty standard/non-ILF gear. A lot of volume pedals, like ognoy mentioned.

I think the drone commander and CT5 is part of the drone setup which David Bryant uses for the drone numbers. I think he added some modular stuff as well.

They do have a lot of rad stuff on their boards now, but they also still got the old ones as RV-3, Turbo Rat, CS-2...

Don't forget the black tape. The black tape was very important to their sound.

ok so if it's just that it's ok for me but i don't see me as a newbie in guitar effects and this sounds really bugs me...

may the place in the effect chain change somethings ?
i usually play my delay after my overdrive/distortion etc.. but i will try the other place (delay before)

so you keep to tell me that the sound is not as particular as i thinks : ) but maybe it's due to production with a lot off tracks of the same part and maybe this can cause this sounds
i strat to thinking that it can be more the production that the effects...
