I wonder if they changed the hardware at all between the Tonal Recall and Thermae? It could just be new firmware and paint (not that a new product isn't justified). I'd like to see inside one of them, someday.

What's funny is that Joel may have just released his best and most fun pedal, yet external expectations are obscuring this. The Thermae makes me think of a Supa Puss on mescaline. It's not the first delay to handle radical shifts or arpeggiating rhythms, but I do feel like the dipswitches and the CB format will allow for a lot more nuance over the dynamics. UC mentioned the Limbo (2014 launch), but the MF-104M and the Supa Puss both came out in 2012. I imagine there were rack delays 10+ years earlier that could do similar effects. (didn't the Timebender in 2009 have arp-like capabilities?) Today if you've got an EHX 8-Step, you can also produce similar textures with a Tonal Recall, EHX DMM 1100-TT, the OBNE delays, some of the TC delays, and more.
Those bright, cascading leaps can certainly be had from other pedals, but between the filter, glide, and rear controls, you should be able to expand upon previous experiences. I heard vibrato and dying tape emulation in that demo, so I don't think you can discount it as a Swiss Army modulation box either. That video barely tugged on the curtain. This is an ambitious offering that's been getting fine-tuned for years, but its gestalt can't be realized without a deeper dive.
Those bright, cascading leaps can certainly be had from other pedals, but between the filter, glide, and rear controls, you should be able to expand upon previous experiences. I'm fuckin hyped for Thermae. CBA stuff has been the most inspiring pedals I've purchased in the last year, even moreso than the Meris ones which are right up there. I've been waiting for another crazy design and this satisfies my curiosity.

While this is cool, it is pricey and I can't get excited without a real demo by a more boring demoer. Or manual, or inevitably being wowed by one in a store

This prototype was just finished before the trip, we were discovering it as we went along. All the sounds in the demo were actually recorded in the bath house within about 45 minutes. As the trip went along we started to find different things it could do and different ways to use it.

Also, I'm not saying the price isn't justified. I own a RKM Tonal Recall and it's by far my favourite delay. But I probably would never have gotten one had it not been in a trade. Also, I'm still totally interested in the Thermae despite the price, I just doubt I'll have that kind of money available any time soon.

Are the chips in the Thermae 80s Panasonic MN3005 or the reissue MN3005 made by xvive? Aside from the different voltage there shouldn't be a huge pricing difference between them. Certainly not to justify double the price on chips alone. The Chase Bliss pedals are more expensive because they are. Its not a reasoning thing.
