For those with a DLD, what modulation and effects have you found most useful while using it as a looper?

Stable clock provider. I'm using Pamela's New Workout for it. Some kind of switch to trigger hold/reverse for delays 1 and 2 independently (or you can just use the buttons on the DLD itself, they're very sturdy). I'm using Tetrapad for that (in fader mode to gradually slide into some parameters like ramping feedback and delay time).

I don't use it as a long looper though (mainly small loops).

lol. i had a similar thing coming back from Europe a week or two after the 9/11 attacks. last non-US stop was Gernany, so did customs in Berlin. everybody's security was SUPER heightened, and they separated us into guy line and grrL line, VERY thorough over the clothes junk movement searching, then had us empty our bags.

2 guards/police with sub machine guns stood watch while a custom official went through my stuff. damn near got shot when i pulled my OG Electribe M out of my bag. when he asked what it was i said, "drum machine? electronic music? like.... Kraftwerk! oonce oonce oonce oonce?".

he told me to turn it on so i dug the RC car battery with duct taped together leads coming off of it out and plugged it in. already looked shady, but then the power up sequence is 1 key of the keyboard lights RED, then 2 keys of the keyboard lights RED, then 3 keys-

"TURN IT OFF! TURN IT OFFFFF!!"

oddly enough, his Fear Of Getting Exploded response was to tell me to put everything away and go.... just.... go. get on the plane. away from me.

good times.

I went mad with power and bought three Doepfer modules that were on sale.

The verdict: Doepfer a-172 Min/Max: I thought four inputs would be more fun, but maybe two is the perfect amount. I think my Kinks might make this unnecessary. Up until now I haven’t found a modulation destination that benefits from this module over a two input min/max but I’ll keep trying.

Doepfer a-125 Voltage Controlled Phase Shifter: a little bit on the subtle side but still has a seductive character that makes you want to find the perfect sweet spot. It sounds lovely but a little vanilla... will have to investigate the sweetness.

Doepfer a-189-1 Bit Modifier: fucking hell this is awesome for the money! 16 bit-reduction algorithms... not 16 bits , 16 different algorithms. Plus a sample rate reducer, everything important under voltage control... amazing!

Try the A-172 with audio, it can do some neat stuff to oscillators (even better with an attenuator before each input)...

So I've been looping with my guitar lately and it's inspired the (half serious) idea for a small modular looper. I'm thinking of this for creating textures and processing external signals, so conceptually it's more of a processor/effect than an oscillator-based synth.

This is what I've thought of thus far. Since there's 20hp left and making hypothetical systems is fun, what would you add? Things I've thought about are another modulation source, another effect for the DLD effects loop, a proper VCA (outside of cold mac), a clock divider/logic...

kbit - some things that could be useful would be :

- move mixing (unless you want to use the Quadratt for that)
- Monome Walk : to control things with your feet (DLD/etc.)
- Some tempo synched LFOs, driven through Walk for example. Peaks is a good candidate here.
- A global clock source with variations would also be useful I think.

Also, you'd probably want some overdrive/FSU module in there, or at least something that can also do this. 3 sisters might be overkill there, a Cinnamon is a more simple filter but also does nice gritty things to sounds when asked to, for example.

What do you already have from that rack ?

Got some XAOC shit coming in.

:picard:

After this I'm going to get a new case for my birthday later this year and not buy any more modules until I sell everything I'm not using.

Kbit & Osc - yeah I've actually been entrtaining the idea of getting a Monome Walk to work the Morphagene, one footswitch to the Rec & one to the Splice, so you tap both to record a new splice, and just tap record to end the recording. Seems like it'd be a neat idea to turn SOS to full input signal, get a little 1-4 minute improvisation going, and be ripping loops from that as you play, then segueing into a session of messing with those samples you took.
Also +1 for Peaks with Dead Man's Catch on it. And yea a clock of some kind would probably help, especially if you wanna do time stretching and the likes on the morphagene.

solo tunes:
completed works || loosey goosey releases
associated acts:
Raab Zamboni (fake jazz/real noise//sax, modular synth, editing, misc) || Field Guide (my best friends//sax on 2 tracks)

I make t-shirts, patches, koozies, buttons, CDs, sometimes tapes, and eventually i'll start working on pedals again. DM me for pricing!

I read on MW that you have to physically press both record and splice to initiate a new recording, a gate at both inputs won't do it unfortunately.

Osc: out if that I only have the Sisters and Quadratt. I like the idea of Sisters being a meta filter but who knows how good that would be in practice. I like the look of the addac foot controllers instead of walk, but they'd both be useful.

Between the Quadratt and Cold Mac I'd be pretty set on mixing. & I'm not really looking to do lots of tempo locked looping, so the clock outs on the noise tools and 4ms might suffice. Could be cool to have a CV controlled clock but I honestly wouldn't want to give myself too many options if this were a thing I do. I would definitely want to dedicate more brain power for improvising and reflection rather than trying to understand a patch.

Just friends and noise tools are clockable modulation sources, but one more of a different flavor (a la peaks or something) could be useful. All good food for thought. Thanks y'all.

This is dank as hell. I love the idea of putting the Varigate upside down so that the outputs are on the top. Maybe my only gripe with that module...
