I still have my PS1 .. still works .. love them final fantasy tactics.

Any PI users recommend a good wireless usb vintage style game paddle ? I found one that looks a lot like the SNES paddle with 2 trigger bumpers and 2 added analog sticks as well. Looks dece.

I really like the 8bitdo stuff? Though, there is a bit more setup involved with those than some controllers. That fancy, wireless logitech controller’s been the best I’ve used so far.

That thread didn't wind up going anywhere. I see you even posted in it once upon a time, heh.

I currently lack an intact setup with all those consoles (or photos of said rig) but I plan on one taking shape again soon enough!
Do use various emulators but much prefer playing games made for consoles, on console, in their original context. Some exceptions obv apply, as a jrpg experience can be forgiving w/input lag, platformers not so much. Rare/prohibitively expensive titles, too...better to play how you can than not play at all. Maybe.

My available good2go consoles are snes, gen, gc+gbp, ps1, ps2 and a ds-lite with maybe 20-30 games apiece. I've gotta *treat* my toaster NES with a recap and clip a pin to break the reset loop...then mod for rgb output. Someday I'll have a rig including a Neo Geo, Saturn, PCE

I also still have a 3do with all the games worth owning, but keep getting on+off+on the fence about selling that & funding things toward the above gear.
They truly helped make an only child's childhood a lot more fun when friends couldn't come out to play, and were at their best when they could/for sleepover weekends.

I really agree with playing console games on consoles mentality. Nothing kills the fun more than dealing with Windows 10. That’s exactly why I’m a big fan of the retropie-based console for console-based games. Though, having a setup like your’s would bring intoxicating levels of nostalgia.

That’s interesting that that’s why you like those old games! My love for them comes from a sheltered and lonely childhood, we had an Apple ii, SNES, and a gbp. My nearest neighbors were over a mile away, so, I spent a large amount of my childhood playing the few videogames we had. Now I’m playing all the games I never got a chance to play growing up because they’re still new to me and fill me with nostalgia at the same time.

Yeah, my parents divorced after I turned 9 and with joint custody, in the early 90s that meant quite a bit of time being a latchkey kid. Nostalgia is def a big component of it but the games themselves...are great. Japan 1985-2005 is a magical time for vidya, back when games didn't blow the bulk of their budget on voice acting and graphic presentation, yet they still managed to look and sound great.
They def helped a weird kid socialize and make friends with all types of people who would otherwise seem incompatible as playmates.

i've been having a great time lately delving into entire console generations i missed out on as a kid (until a few years ago i'd only been able to play NES, GBC/GBA, PSX and Gamecube).

i have a soft spot for handheld consoles, and my favourite way to play is generally hacking newer gen consoles to emulate older ones (my living situation doesn't permit having a lot of stuff either so it works out).
currently use:
-PSP-3000 (soft-mod) for PSP, NES, SNES and GB/GBC/GBA - Earthbound/Mother, old Shin Megami Tensei games and romhacks in particular
-New 3DS XL (B9S/Luma3DS + R4i) for DS/3DS (can do more but emulating anything else on a dual screen console just seems weird to me) - lots of weird old DS games that i wanted to check out (Contact, Flower Sun & Rain, Dark Spire, Theresia)
-Wii (soft-mod) for Wii/GC
aand everything else on a laptop (PCSX2 for Nocturne/Drakengard etc, NPII for Touhou PC-98 games, Steam, etc)

am also in the process of getting a hacked PS Vita to replace everything i use the PSP for and toy around with emulating additional consoles (vita can support 128gb+ micro sd and has a better battery than the PSP)
PC-98/PC-Engine/Turbo Grafx is probably my favourite vintage platform and i'm finally at the point where i can mostly play games in Japanese so i'm looking forward to delving into that.

the ports of PS2 games we've been getting on PS4 and/or Steam lately have been pretty good too. Okami, Kingdom Hearts, Jak & Daxter etc all work really well.

There isn’t really a store anywhere to buy these. But you can contact the guy directly. It’s a bit of roll of the dice from what I’ve gathered. I got a fully assembled version, with literally 1000s of games preinstalled with Recalbox (as opposed to the more popular retropie). But the worst case scenario is you have to buy the battery and raspberry pi3 separately, assemble everything (no soldering required), and then install retropie. He always posts weird advertisement-style videos, but he usually posts his contact info in the description:

Final price was $208, which is about 40-50 more than it would cost to build yourself. But the end product is really really nice. Though, his communication skills are obviously heavily bolstered by google translate.

Heh, in my case the folks divorcing didn't turn me into a gamer (got my 1st NES the year prior to their split) but it surely expanded the rabbit hole and gave me provisions to explore. I got a 2nd NES so I could play at both houses [rare arrangement, split weeks/alternate weekends, both parents lived <1mi apart] then got a snes/gameboy at dad's and genesis/gamegear at mom's. Shortly thereafter is when I have my first internet memories, looking up game genie code hax for SF2 w/dad's usenet and then my first real contribution to the internet via FF3 BBS on Prodigy. External modem days.

Speaking of which, I was actually one of the XBAND-SNES subs in 96-97. Cant believe that was 20 years ago. Tried to see if my locally stored xmail info was still intact but the battery backup failed. Oh well.

PSP completely missed me, and is something I've been looking-back to get as well, but passively. Not at all a priority.
I have an r4 and m3 card for the DS and with that, the entire gb/gbc/gba/ds libraries emulated without input lag. NES games play well too but the screen res causes snes & gen roms to be chopped or letterbox'd.

The last XP machine I built in 2007 saw a lot of MAME play. SegaCD-Fusion, too.

My parents split too, and yeah, it didn’t get me started but it did deepen the obsession with vidya games. My first system was an SNES from my aunt. She gave it to me because I had terrible eye-hand coordination.

The retropi looks pretty dope. I have been using a hacked PSP to play NES, SNES, Sega, Neo Geo, and Turbografx 16 roms. Tiny screen but super fun. I have been very into lifeforce, R-TYpe, Kid Nikki Radical Ninja and Metal Slug lately. Tiny screen but pretty sure it has a video out.

Got the kid a 2DSxl for Christmas and have been enjoying Sonic 2 and the Mega Man collection on that.

They're a blessing, and remind you of their worth when having to commute, travel out of state, or just generally wait.

My NES was first played on a 9" and then 13" rotary-dial tvs until I turned 12 and got another (hand-me-down) big boy set from grandparents. Gamechanger is a diluted term at this point but barely begins to describe the significance of that event.
It's easy to take today's big screens for granted, but I was full-spaz ecstatic to get that 27" screen and an introduction to multiple aux inputs including a bizarre RGB din. Surely I didn't care that it was already 7 years old and missing its remote. I suddenly had the biggest screen in the house/out of my friends. An unexpected addition, being part of the reduced school lunch program at the time.

I remember life before enormous screens were commonplace. In 2002 I found a 40” rear-projection tv at goodwill for $50. That TV changed my life
