Like I need to be tempted with more red.

Got Christmas loots installed and rockin'. SynthTech shipped my black E352 that I was not expecting until late January! Got it on the 23rd, along with a little order from Trogotronic - m4 button array module (not even on MG yet), m35 power conditioning cable (fixes a glitch that my Qu-bit Rhythm was experiencing w/the trog power supply), and 100 chrome hexbolts.

Side note:

Where does everyone stand on sliding nuts in a case? All of my cases have sliding nuts, and they're annoying as hell IMO, but they do offer a lot of flexibility (i.e. everything will always fit). Not sure what I want to do for the next case, though.

So I just switched over with the Make Noise case and it does make row rearranging way easier (esp if you strategically space out the extra nuts), but it took me so dang long to figure out how to get the nuts to thread properly. I must've spent 15 minutes getting the first 3 modules in

The rest followed easily enough. If you don't mind a little extra setup time & you definitely have enough nuts in the case I see no reason why sliding nuts aren't great. Also they totally got rid of the gaptooth that my Mantis was plagued by. It's so much nicer to stare at a contiguous wall of modules.

Also on the Varigate 4+ subject, I'm still getting used to mine but I like it alright so far. The Voltage Block is super sick & pretty intuitive, so hopefully this makes as much sense as quickly. I'll probalby put it through some trials today & see how it goes.

jia. i've only had racks with sliding nuts, and that's been by choice. i get what people complain about with them, it's a little annoying if you want to add a module in a row almost full you might have to take a bunch of modules out to get access to some nuts (giggety), but the idea of any space between modules FREAKS ME RIGHT THE FUCK OUT.

so. yesh. slidy please.

I’m cool with sliding nuts or regular rails. The people that complain overly much about sliding nuts are rediculous. It is the last thing I would base a case purchase on.

I haven’t shared pics of the big Doepfer cases here yet I don’t think, got them around my birthday in Sept?

I really like the mixer, and plan to get the extra 2 channels expander. And maybe just maybe the upcoming db25 individual outs expander, but I need another interface to handle all that, so I’m still undecided and have to weigh the cost/benefits some more. I don’t really have room for a large outboard mixer in my music area so I’m really glad WMD came out with this.

The cool WMD stereo compressor I don’t own, it was designed with the performance mixer in mind but it does work standalone. I own the Audio Damage Kompressor, which can do stereo but I prefer it as either a side band compressor for drums/bass or as a distortion, it does some hard clipping wave shaping with the gain knob. I mostly just want to fill the rest of the case with some Doepfer effects and utilities, because they’re relatively affordable and on the straightforward side.

Hexagonal sliding nuts are evil things and should burn in hell. They get stuck all the time and rearranging modules becomes an obscenely gigantic pain in the ass. Square ones are probably better in that regard.

Having to plan to have spare nuts all over the place can also be annoying when you just want to move a couple of modules.

My previous case (Cell 90 first generation) had hex nuts and it was terrible. My current Intellijel case has proper rails and it's much, much easier to use. I don't care about tiny sub-mm gaps here and there, it helps ventilate the thing a bit I guess. But then I have silver, black and wooden panels and that doesn't annoy me at all so people who obsess over these things might have a different opinion.

After it was suggested on lines (the polite and civilized cousin of ILF

), I started patching using only 3 modules. The goal as I see it is to explore patching and creation a bit differently based on this constraint. Obviously, what you can do depends on the modules and I think using something like an ER-301 would somehow defeat the purpose but as long as it's useful for the person who makes the patch, who cares ?

Anyway, I got some gnarly industrial-techno rhythms going on now with Maths + Ultrafold + BIA and I'm trying to record something listenable enough to put on Soundcloud or something.

I'm going to try other combinations of modules after that, it's a really nice way to patch. Everyone here should try doing that kind of things, it's super refreshing to focus on using just a specific set of tools rather than end up with default maximalism...
