@Ugly Nora

Didn't Netflix take a stand by terminating Kevin Spacey from their current and upcoming projects ...???

You do know that not everyone in "Hollywood" is a predator, right?

Hey, I bet you're typing your responses from a phone, computer, tablet...which is bound to have someone in their employ who has assaulted someone, so by posting here via phone/computer/tablet, you are directly supporting predators.

You should boycott your phone/computer/tablet...so we don't have to read your bullshit anymore.

#investmentclubsuperhero : Money also has a bloody history--you should boycott money, too.

Hollywood is a generic term for an entire industry that spans multiple types of media, industries, companies, unions, individual businesses and people. A boycott wouldn't accomplish anything in stopping predators, because one person or one company doesn't make a movie or a television show. The people giving their accounts of harassment, abuse and assault in these cases are a part of Hollywood and a lot of the stories they've shared stem from working WITH their abuser(s), so boycotts would have as big an impact on them. It's not an industry problem, it's a cultural problem. This is happening in EVERY type of industry, in any situation where people have power or social currency that gives them the opportunity to harass, abuse and assault people they have influence or control over. Making it socially and legally unacceptable behavior, believing someone when they come forth with an account of abuse, supporting elected officials (and the legislation they introduce/support) and NGOs that are advocates for victims' rights is a productive way to get involved, in a proactive way. When you have people saying things like "it's irresponsible to believe accusations with no proof" and "where there's no penetration, there's no rape" in reaction to accounts of sexual harassment, abuse or assault...THAT'S a big part of the problem. If there's no will to believe people when they disclose sexual abuse, it doesn't even matter what the laws are because the legal system will never be involved. The irony of asserting that believing an accusation itself is unfair automatically gives the benefit of belief and protection to the accused abuser, preventing them from ever being investigated. We can't reverse the terrible things that have already been done, but we can stop excusing and empowering predators through a culture that makes it easy to abuse and very difficult to accuse. When you consider believing a potential victim of a crime to be a violation of "innocent until proven guilty", how could there ever be any criminal justice? We don't apply this standard to other types of crimes at all.

I think the base level of decency in these matters, is simply believing people who are willing to come forward with accounts of sexual harassment, abuse or assault and giving them support. Believing someone making an accusation doesn't guarantee an arrest, indictment or conviction by a long shot, let alone the potential false convictions that always come up in these sorts of conversations. Not believing a claim, however, is a guarantee of no action of any sort being taken to help the person making the claim or stop the potential predator.

I blame the lack of good nutrition in the body and a mis-flux of proteins and enzymes which block certain hormonal flow point receptors causing a build up in beastly rage that would other wise be expelled threw sleeping after a good meal.

Hey...if your 15, and your "dating" a "13" year old...would you be considered a pedophile? And if your 17 and you put the moves on a few female teachers that must be in their mid 30's? and they respond back like a tiger, is that the devil or the need to be fruitful and have a good time....

while I agree that Ugly Nora's analogy is very flawed, I agree with the implication that we all have a personal responsibility to root out rape culture, sexual harassment, and violence, especially at a local level.

If this is how you handle arguments and discussions in real life then I pity those around you.

This whole thread is as bad as a news article comments section and for the most part, you're just as bad as each other, scoring points on others pain and shouting down each other.

I will give this thread one more chance to have some decency.

I'm confused what prompted this response. Was it a reaction to the "die in a fire" comments, the "boycott Hollywood" post, or something else?

That is not what I said, though I get your point. It definitely changes minds, but not when it devolves to mudslinging. I thought this was a clear and obvious point, but I keep making it in different ways, so I have obviously not done a good job.

There are people who think that punching Richard Spencer is great and funny, and people who think that punching Richard Spencer is mostly making the puncher feel great (there are clearly many shades in between, but I'm being reductive to make a point without using pejorative acronyms). The ideal outcome isn't that he fucks off and dies, but that he could gain the capacity for introspection, and even show his flock of dummies a possible path for change. That's not directly related, just a thought experiment about the best outcome for when people are shit.

All of this is rooted in my own belief that people can learn if they have relationships with others who have different perspectives, which is not something a ton of people agree with. Winning a fisking battle on the internet has never prompted a change of heart. This isn't a case for forgiving egregious behavior, it's a case of eliminating egregious behavior at its root.

Again: what the fuck do I know. My method has had little visible success. Maybe I should start lifting weights and join Antifa instead of talking with people for a living.
Olin wrote:That may be a romantic and overly optimistic thought process, but not as much as expecting people to be on their best behaviour when something so critical and upsetting is brought about.
tl;dr: there isn't a realistic "good way" to have this conversation.
Yeah.
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.

What, exactly, is the point of this post? Why do you seem to only be in this thread to deflect or distract and not actually discuss the matter at hand?
