Occult/horror works, too, but I'm looking for less traditional material and/or protagonists/antagonists.

I'll name two to get the thread started.

Kenneth Anger's Lucifer Rising and Jodorowsky's El Topo---

Not a big fan but on top of Jorodowsky's these come to mind right now:

Shadows of forgotten ancestors
The color of pomegranates
Valerie and her week of wonders

WIZARDS - Dir. Ralph Bakshi (one of my all time favorite filmmakers [COON SKIN is his masterpiece; not fantasy. He also did the first adaptation of THE HOBBIT])
Image
PEACE ON EARTH - MGM Short from 1939 - Talking animals tell the story of the last human. Inadvertently misanthropic masterpiece. Flat out timeless imo.
Image

If you're into Jorodowsky check out the Quay Brothers. Masters of stop-motion animation. Not quite fantasy as we know it. If you like that check out Jan Svankmajer, also a maestro of stop motion and much more fantasy oriented.

If you like Anime....nothing tops...the black swordsman...I'm talking about the one and only Guts..
BERSERK!!!
Image

You probably know LEGEND from the 80's. Personally, I think that movie sucks. A lesser known 80's gem is LADY IN WHITE (although the last act of the film is capital R - Retarded)
Image

Then you have your flagship Terry Gilliam (who was very inspired by Svankmajer) movies (TIME BANDITS, MUNCHAUSEN etc.) some other shit...I think fantasy is best represented in anime (SPIRITED AWAY, PRINCESS MONONOKE etc.)
"SWIPE LEFT ASSHOLE!" -retinal orbita
"Whatever ASSHOLE here’s my pedal that makes humpback whale noises and also it has a built in sequencer so stick it in your craw! -retinal orbita
"Patty Mullen takes me from a ball peen to a sledge" -The Great Velvet Hammer
"...at this exact moment Divine has learned of your jealous scheme from the local town gossip. She also has your address, ASS HOLE!" -Narrator (Mr. J) PINK FLAMINGOS

I think all the other fantasy I know of (besides mainstream stuff) fall into the category of silent film or stop-motion.
HAXAN: WITCHCRAFT THROUGH THE AGES (I find movies like this are less interesting on a narrative level and much more suited to playing in the background with some cool tunes on)

Forgot about THE DEVILS - 1971 a Ken Russell gem. Generally speaking anything with Oliver Reed is awesome.

Eh, I'm calling this one fantasy. PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE - 1974 Brian DePalma Musical Extravaganza. I'll let the trailer speak for it...certainly unconventional.

Glad to see some of my favourites already mentioned! Fuck yeah, Zardoz.

Remember finding Taste of Tea to be sort of intriguing. Svankmajer's Faust is also good, as is Le sang d'un poète. Oh, and check out Fantastic Planet and Gandahar. And you might like Herzog's Fata Morgana?

I forgot about FIRE AND ICE! For whatever reason I associate Bakshi with gritty urban dramas ala COON SKIN and HEAVY TRAFFIC. Also, I should have remembered THE HOBBIT was Ranklin/Bass (whose films I adore). There is this one Ranklin/Bass production that is sooo far out, one of their last ones. THE LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF SANTA CLAUS
I would...
Image

Regarding gibli, I did in my initial post...BESERK. I also like SPICE & WOLF :idk:. I've watched a ton of shitty OVA's too (I went through an old harddrive this week and found lots of GENOCYBER and FIST OF THE NORTH STAR :woot:). NEON GENESIS is probably one of my 10 favorite things I have done in my life

I like BEDKNOBS & BROOMSTICKS too. Filmed versions of THE NUTCRACKER can get pretty trippy too.

Or...we can get real weird...

Just here to echo that Phantom of the Paradise is epically fantastic.

Edit: also saw the remastered version of Stalker (Tarkovsky), which was extremely weird and wonderful.
