I will use hoss.....mostly in a passive aggressive derogatory way. Sometimes to be quirky. Very similar to pal or guy.

I've been called hoss a million times and I like in the Midwest. So I have no idea.

In east Texas it was a term I heard used by old men talking to younger men and by coaches.

I'll agree with above, too, that the only time I've ever used it or heard it used outside of the just mentioned context is in a dismissive way.
