Movies/Songs/Books that Predict?!?
What are some media from the past that appeared to have hit it out of the park in terms of predicting/anticipating events/technology/ideas?
This one may be a stretch, but Videodrome was released in the early 80s yet the ideas from Professor Brian Oblivion appear to have suggested a future where people would have "television selves" - today called social media:

SPOILER ALERT: Ironically, Videodrome, the signal that corrupts the mind and turns people into assassins, was introduced as a form of entertainment for the viewer but was later used to achieve its sinister aims. The government created Videodrome in the movie, the government created the Internet via Darpanet ... a cool little feature of the movie is the use of Beta Max as the video media, I believe back then folks thought Beta was going to be standard ...

I think I read somewhere that Neuromancer predicted pretty much all of our current tech except for the cellular phone. It's been a while since I read it, but I remember land lines in space.

Yeah, Neuromancer was ahead of its time with its cyberpunk theme ... many scientists are actually young sci-fi fans in disguise!Bloodhammer wrote:I think I read somewhere that Neuromancer predicted pretty much all of our current tech except for the cellular phone. I was pretty much just getting the obligatory "Idiocracy is a documentary" post out of the way, so we could move on.JereFuzz wrote:Funny, but I don't think this reflects reality - I believe people are actually getting smarter, believe it or not - great movie btw ...Bloodhammer wrote:Thanks.![]()

I think Star Trek predicted smartphones, but a lot of tech came from actually trying to make Star Trek tech real, so it's up in the air I guess.

Yes, the prediction is actually the source material for the actual creation ... self-fulfilling prophecy ...Bloodhammer wrote:I was pretty much just getting the obligatory "Idiocracy is a documentary" post out of the way, so we could move on.JereFuzz wrote:Funny, but I don't think this reflects reality - I believe people are actually getting smarter, believe it or not - great movie btw ...Bloodhammer wrote:Thanks.![]()

I think he took a lot out of Brave New World but made it darker. Where human connections are there in Brave New World, just superficial...seems much more realistic in THX1138 how human connections are basically non-existent.

I think Zardoz is incredibly...relevant in terms predicting the course of behaviors and perceptions in society...hypocrisies of utopian communes, although its meaning is heavily obscured by the crazy visuals.
