Looking for advice on RC cars

Thought there might be a chance someone here is into RC.
I would like to find a decent-ish / cheap-ish RC car for my kid but I get lost in the sea of choices ...

there seems to be a huge gap between the expensive pro/hobby grade stuff and the crap you get in toy shops.

What I am looking for is :
4x4
waterproof
not necessarily fast but strong enough to climb on small rocks, hills etc
battery powered, obviously

I don't have any particular budget in mind but my kid is 5 and I don't know how serious he is with this so I would prefer something not too expensive but also not some junk that will break after two runs.
If any of you have some tips it would be really cool
Note: As I am in the EU, US offerings will probably not be very interesting economically. I'd consider something out of China though, if it is proved to be ok.

Also, if you feel so inclined fear not to show off your RC beauties :-)
