Comparatively, people don't buy music anymore, they don't go see bands any more, they don't value music. Same with movies which were kind of the art of the 20th century along with music. They go to a movie and sit and pretend they are enjoying it or connecting with whatever dumb shit some guy in a spandex suit is zipping around the sky fighting Lord Gorgol or something idiotic.
There is nothing to replace, the interest is gone. Its a mostly a very superficial aspect of peoples lives compared to the past.

People can't afford to spend $25 on a record with only two songs you like every single week, anymore. Same with going to concerts (which are only getting more and more expensive, it seems).

There's more to modern film than fantasy and sci-fi. Just because you don't enjoy or connect with it, doesn't mean everyone feels the same.

I think you're really missing the point. Its not about the quality of the product, its about how the internet has become a catalyst for the rapid and constantly shifting nature of modern cultural interest, thus a lesser demand for the product, regardless of how good or shitty it might be. If anything, the expectation of an arrested state of culture is the the old man rant; desperately clinging to the nostalgia of times long gone.

Honestly I couldn't care whether the electric guitar dies, and not whether rock dies either. It cannot remain popular forever, and sooner or later is bound to become a niche. But that doesn't matter. There is still rad classical music in all sorts of styles being made, there is still a vibrant jazz scene. Yeah, Blue Train is probably not going to get produced again, but that doesn't matter - if I want Coltrane I can listen to Coltrane. Or I can go and listen to some modern stuff that is also great. Same thing will happen with guitar based music.

They never did in the past, thats the point. You had less stuff so it was valued more, in addition to having to pay for it. It's dismissive to pass off the psychological mechanism that forking over that 12 dollars for the CD or whatever had back in the day vs. just stealing it off youtube. I absolutely believe that the monetary value transcended into greater emotional value than present.

I don't believe people 'connect' with the stuff as they did in the past because there is more of it. The internet is a much greater shift in consumption of media than something like TV or Radio imo. It's impact is currently underestimated. TV, Radio were major shifts, they were not ubiquitous throughout daily life like the internet is which is a huge difference.

people are definitely still connecting with said entertainment just the mass populous likes whats handed to them, they arent going to go searching...too busy, so much being thrown at us, yep, theres "more of it" ......"it" is what? .. entertainment that happens to give the working masses a sense of self worth and everyday you are now the director of your own shit show, total control with a few taps of a button. other forms of art is simple to understand if one is to create by the standards of the studio, or who ever is in control, .....get one done, to get the other done, to fund the project you want to do, then continue the cycle of what sells...and it sells not because people want it, what is out there being referred to as crap remakes is because, no matter what, they will stay in business and their substance is easy...its shiny...it touches on how politics have influenced us to where theres no more fear, just gossip and a jump to say "im a bleeding heart!"....theres sex, murder, deceit, drugs, the accentuating sense of self to where red white and blue dont mean anything other than we are better than you.

The problem, as i see it, is that all of the good guitar riffs have already been created. I've crunched the numbers, and it is mathematically impossible to create any more of those iconic-level riffs on par with what we grew up on. So, people are looking for something different, not unlike Zima drinkers.

Anyone read Paul Pope's 100%? In that comic he had strippers dancing behind X Ray machines so you can see them not just naked, but their insides. I think strip clubs will go in that direction too. Like give the dancers a lot of beans and have an internal cam that shows the gas build up as they dance.

I like...a lot...of djent. Although I think I prefer just the djent guitar players rather than a finished polished album. Some of those sound a tad over produced. RIP Justin Lowe. I enjoyed his playing a lot in AFTER THE BURIAL.

Also, declining sales at Guitar Center, Sam Ash, and Gibson are not great key metrics for consumption. People are just tired of getting ripped off. Not that I care if guitar playing is declining...cause I don't...also what Mathias said.

I think what's going to happen is comesect and I are going to start a fartcore band.
