i love the driving notion by itself, going into a STEP, or going into a big muff. if i could have four i would also include a rat, mainly to pair with a big muff or STEP too.

I've been thinking about the STEP lately. I used to love mine. It's a pretty unassuming dirt on its own, but it's mean sounding and cuts through like a boss. Plus the octave is a nice bonus. And the fact that you can set it to be almost a clean green ringer.

Shit, maybe I'll get a STEP.

I don't think I can stick to just 3. I want a light always on OD, something kinda chunky and lo fi, something big and fuzzy for riffs and runs, and then something weird and noisy. But maybe instead of a 4th dirt, I could have a ring mod or octave/pitch shifter or something for weirder shit.

So maybe like a Mini, STEP, and TAFM would get me close to where I wanna be. Maybe a Fuck too. Fuck me.

Frazz Dazzler, Elements, Unpleasant Surprise?
Frazz can be a really nice overdrive.

Or, Boss XT-2, Digitech Death Metal, Velcrobot. That is a pretty sick board for almost nothing. The Boss XT-2 on minimal gain is one of the best lofi overdrives I've heard.

Futureman, Fuck, HM-2.

Just going from the ones I have on the board and use most often. Futureman could be any cool light OD/boost with treble and bass control, I guess. Mini, Power Boost? Fuck is essential all-dirt. HM-2 could also maybe be replaced by other hi-gain. Fuzz, WHO NEEDS IT?

JK, I just can't choose...

Mini, STEP, Unpleasant Surprise would be a fun combo.

The Elements, Frazz Dazzler, and Pretty Years are what I have on my board now and I'm loving the way they're interacting with each other but I have always been a big fan of the fuck/tafm combo. This is the first time I've ran more than 2 dirt pedals on my board but the PY at the end of the the chain is pretty awesome.

Right now I'm running a Brothers and a Han-taun. That kinda counts as three, right? Actually, I'm still not fully happy with my dirt section. I love the sounds I get out of both my existing pedals, but I'm having a hard time getting the really huge, full-sounding fuzz I need for certain parts. I'm considering trying a Shigeharu and/or Mini. I was running a Musket before I got the Brothers, and it's a great pedal, but Muffs just never seem to pair well with my amp (Quad Reverb), even with extra mids. They're always close, but just sound sort of thin.

If funds are tight and the sense of urgency ever changes, Valeton may be a brand worth considering. Their offerings easily cover two of the three slots in question. 3pdt makes a decent Fuzz Factory clone that can provide the odd textures on the cheap.

I would recommend a Yellowcake Furry Burrito (which can provide low gain OD, Muff-ish fuzz, and bizarro horn toots) as part of the dirt trinity if money will eventually be no object ... and the other two pedals could be unconventional boosts, octave-based, and/or more glitchy. :idk:

when i first bought the STEP i was disappointed honestly. it was one of those gut sinking moments. but then i ran my the driving notion into it and immediately knew that i would never sell it. Also, a rat running into it is great. I like it with the driving notion because you can still get some really great articulation and note clarity. I don't know if you care about how things translate into recording, but this combo is amazing when recording as well and translates great, as does the driving notion running into a muff.

Ive had a couple Driving Notions and the only time I ever bonded with it was on bass. The rest of the time it's way too scooped sounding for my liking. I can't seem to get it to sound exactly like I want it to. I've had and flipped 3 or 4 now. I want to love it, but it's never worked out for me.

i think it really depends on what type of amp and guitar you are using too. I use it now with a strat and love it, but with a les paul i couldn't find many ways of liking it running through an ibanez tsa30 tube amp at pretty balanced amp settings. the variation in sound, at least to my ears, was huge, in my room at least
