This one hurt a bit. Loved this man...saw him with the band before they broke up, when they got back together, and solo. Hope he finally found some peace...well-documented struggles with substance abuse and depression.
I think most folks here appreciate dark/black humor, but some of this seems pretty fucked up and unfunny.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.

Re: Chris Cornell
The link between will (or principle) and action is tenuous, at best. Having said that,
A fairly robust tradition exists within punk of using (often quite crass) gallows humor in response to displays of the Cult of the Rock Star, often (and especially) during the inevitable wails of lament following the death of a Rock Idol. To give one of my favorite examples, there is "One Down, Three to Go" by the Meatmen (invoked earlier in this thread with "Two Down, Two to Go"), which was written in response to the killing of John Lennon.

This course, a perpetual alternation of determining what is true, and then setting aside this determining, constitutes, strictly speaking, the steady everyday life and activity of perpetual consciousness, a consciousness which fancies itself to be moving in the realm of truth.

ah yes, the droll gallows humor of calling Lennon's widow a "slopehead." Thank you for continuing this rich artistic tradition.

I just always thought he was the guy from Metallica and Soundgarden was his side project. I believed this for way longer than I care to admit.

When punk starts referencing it's robust traitions it ceases to be useful. It's like, you had one job to do, punk. Seems like you're a student of punk and a poor one, good day to you asshole.

Re: Chris Cornell
Punk was never "useful," even (and perhaps especially) the bands that were trying to be "useful," like Minor Threat. On that score, I take Pussy Galore's side of the argument (see that Dischord house burning?). The attempt by punk to become, or the conceit that it can be, "useful," is a corruption of the 50s aesthetic at the core of punk.

Well you've got the obnoxious butthole part of punk down, Witt. You must have so many friends.
