The horrible NWR movie I was referring to was the Neon Demon. Although rather beautiful from a visual standpoint, it was fucking horrendous. And I've got a pretty high threshold for tolerating badness in movies... I can't even remember the last time anything else made me legitimately angry for taking time out of my life :D

I didn't like NEON DEMON. But I'm glad somebody made it...
Highlights of NEON DEMON:
1. Keanu
2. Karl Glusman (in a role outside of LOVE)
3. Score (Cliff Martinez)
4. Cinematography (Natasha Braier)
5. SPOILER
NSFW: show
Jena Malone masturbating on a corpse
"SWIPE LEFT ASSHOLE!" -retinal orbita
"Whatever ASSHOLE here’s my pedal that makes humpback whale noises and also it has a built in sequencer so stick it in your craw! -retinal orbita
"Patty Mullen takes me from a ball peen to a sledge" -The Great Velvet Hammer
"...at this exact moment Divine has learned of your jealous scheme from the local town gossip. She also has your address, ASS HOLE!" -Narrator (Mr. J) PINK FLAMINGOS

I'm with Pope, ONLY GOD FORGIVES is a masterpiece. And I agree Pope, it has its etymology in SE Asian cinema. That movie is hypnotizing. I think the best of the recent Refn movies. Pope, you may enjoy UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES if you are into that sort of thing (another movie in my top ten).

Seen every Denis Villeneuve. Big fan (ENEMY is my favorite).

My personal dream team for this would have been DIR: Gasper Noe STARRING: Josh Hamilton (Protagonist) and Peter Sarsgaard (introspective antagonist) throw in Karl Gusman in a menacing supporting role. With Zosia Mamet, Zaraah Abrahams, and Natasha Negovanlis.
Dir of Photography: Benoît Debie Original Score: Neil Young (JK JK, Cliff Martinez)
As much as I love Noe, I can't think of anything he's done that would fit well into a Blade Runner film at all. He's pretty good at meandering, languid character pieces, and I can't see him knowing what to do with as many characters as there in 2049.

I watched the trailer and haven't read the rest of this thread.

It looks like they thought people liked the original because of the INTENSE ACTION SCENES and not because of that nerdy scifi noir garbage???

Yeah SE Asian film can be a bit of an acquired taste. God Forgives sticks out for me because its trying to look at the present, as opposed to being stuck in the 70s/80s, while still retaining those idiosyncrasies of the regional tastes. Thai movies in particular are usually total cheese fests.
Uncle Boonmee popped up on my radar but I never got around to it. Definitely gonna check it out now, thanks mate!

 I think they replaced the noir with grain.
Blade Runner, Mad Max and Star Wars were the first films to make the future look old, werent they?
Old is dusty.

Pope, fair warning...UNCLE BOONMEE is not a deliberate cheese film. It only tries to replicate those aesthetics. The plot is more like a metaphysical art film based around political history in that region of Thailand. The pacing is INSANELY reminiscent of SE Asian films. Really takes its time to unfold. I tend to like slower pace though (hence a fan of BLADE RUNNER).

I got to see the retrospective of MANILA IN THE CLAWS OF LIGHT like two years ago. That is totally up your alley too. Made in the 70's. Sad, brutal movie about urbanization in the Philippines.

I really liked Uncle Boonmee. :trippy: Lots of subtleties to miss if you're not watching carefully.

I've seen the movie like 10 times now and still pick up new things. Some of those times I had it on more for ambience (which I also do for BLADE RUNNER).

I think my new all time favorite is HARD TO BE A GOD. That movie is like no other. LISTEN UP PHILIP is also my favorite but I like that for other reasons.

I wonder how an American adaptation of that would go? You would have to apply it to American history...maybe Boonmee was a public servant in the South during the Civil Rights movement? Or an executive at Lehman Brothers?

Hope you enjoy! All very different films with varying degrees of accessibility. But this is ILF so people are usually into off the beaten path stuff!
