I loved how dry the dialogue was in Drive, definitely seemed influenced by newer Cronenberg like History of Violence. It was weird and subdued but makes the violent moments so pronounced.

Also I finally saw Sicario last year and think I've watched it three more times since. Holy FUCK that movie is so good, and SO damn well shot. I've liked everything he's done.

Yeah Drive reminded me a lot of History of Violence, which is a good thing for me.

And yeah Sicario was great, I loved having that story through Emily Blunt's character. It made everything feel so much more hopeless and out of control.

I enjoyed Sicario but didn't think it was quite as good as other people have said... Maybe needs another watch though, so much of it is just the filming and atmosphere, I probably didn't get into it enough to get the full experience. Definitely a fan of Villeneuve though.

I dunno, I just really liked that film.
The writing was great and the way it was shit reminded me of a lot of Australian cinema with a SE Asian influence. It was just good.

Vid's list made me remember Half Nelson. That's a really good one. Also haven't seen The Believer in forever, but I remember thinking he was pretty impressive in it.

Takeaway: I'm a 16 year old girl and have Gosling posters on my walls.

Also need to watch Only God Forgives. Heard bad things so I've avoided it.

I feel like Winding Refn can be super spotty. That last movie he did almost ruined his entire catalog for me, haha...

After really, really liking Drive I thought I might enjoy Only God Forgives, and was severely let down. It didn't have any of the charm Drive did, and felt kind of lazy in terms of story, a lot like a 90 minute lighting showcase. It was shot really well, but there wasn't really anything worth shooting...

As for 2049, I'm very cautiously optimistic. I hope it isn't action-oriented and BWOOM-y like the trailer kind of makes it feel. The set design looks pretty cool and the entire acting roster is pretty great. I just hope for the love of Christ they don't do the same thing Alien Covenant did, in terms of releasing what felt like the whole fucking film in about 95,000,000,000 trailers before the actual film came out.

I really love Drive and Ryan Gosling in general. The same way I love Keanu Reeves and his action movies. Their shtick works, but it's always pretty easy to see why their cast in their roles.

Also, Refn needs to reboot Highlander. You know that would be fucking brilliant.

A modern continuation of Highlander done right would be tits.
Would have to have Christopher Lambert passing the sword on.

I don't know...I like Gosling in a few movies...Lars and Real Girls was his best movie for me. But I actually don't get the big deal about blade runner. I remember seeing it when I was really young...closer to when it was released I guess...and I didn't get into it at all.

I have been meaning to watch it again...but now I'm thinking should I just watch the new version.

Please change the name of this thread to 'Ryan Gosling Appreciation.'

And Arrival fucked me up for a couple days. Absolutely wonderful. It is the opposite of Independence Day (though that's a fun movie, too), or, a better and more interesting version of The Day the Earth Stood Still.

I really did not want to comment cause BLADE RUNNER was my favorite movie most of my life (still top ten, easily [and all cuts of the film]).

I'm with Pope, ONLY GOD FORGIVES is a masterpiece. And I agree Pope, it has its etymology in SE Asian cinema. That movie is hypnotizing. I think the best of the recent Refn movies. Pope, you may enjoy UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES if you are into that sort of thing (another movie in my top ten).

Seen every Denis Villeneuve. Big fan (ENEMY is my favorite).

My personal dream team for this would have been DIR: Gasper Noe STARRING: Josh Hamilton (Protagonist) and Peter Sarsgaard (introspective antagonist) throw in Karl Gusman in a menacing supporting role. With Zosia Mamet, Zaraah Abrahams, and Natasha Negovanlis.
Dir of Photography: Benoît Debie Original Score: Neil Young (JK JK, Cliff Martinez)
"SWIPE LEFT ASSHOLE!" -retinal orbita
"Whatever ASSHOLE here’s my pedal that makes humpback whale noises and also it has a built in sequencer so stick it in your craw! -retinal orbita
"Patty Mullen takes me from a ball peen to a sledge" -The Great Velvet Hammer
"...at this exact moment Divine has learned of your jealous scheme from the local town gossip. She also has your address, ASS HOLE!" -Narrator (Mr. J) PINK FLAMINGOS
