I know a few Nirvana speaker cabinets weren't plugged in. Kind of creates a visual/psychological thing. If you tell people it's going to be loud, they'll believe it.
But yeah they probably mic one-three amps and the rest are for visual. But I wouldn't be surprised if some bands do have them all plugged in.

Fake, no speakers, not plugged in, etc. Or made of cardboard?
I read somewhere that Angus young has a single 4x12 and a plexi in an isolation box usually under the stage that's miced up to the PA. The rest is for show.
Geddy Lee has a bunch of roasting chickens...or washing machines
Good deals done with all these guys Canada, we put the "u" in satire
Yeah, a lot of them are fake (empty Marshall shells), and some of them are real, but not plugged in.
Tom Sholz (Boston) was well-known to play through at least 5-10 Marshall Super Lead stacks back in the days. My mother tells me to this day that Boston were the loudest band she's ever heard live (which included Sabbath, Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd, etc.)
I've never seen the cardboard setup, but I've seen plenty of bands that use ghost cabinets for show. Just cabinets with no speakers in them. The Chariot beat the crap out of their ghost cabs (and their real cabs(and everything else)).
Hey! Let's talk about serious thing. We're gonna talk about guitar, dude.

awesome live band. the secret to playing with 60 amps on stage is having the volume set at .5
most bands ive seen while working backstage either had like one micd and maybe a few on just to tell everyone there on stage lol or they had like them all going like 3 full stacks
Wait, wouldn't there be a lot of interference with multiple amplifiers? I'd imagine there would be a shitton of cross-cancellation of asynchronous soundwaves because of amp spacing.
Do you like listening to homemade music? Me too. Why don't you try one of mine?

i like pignoses...
McSpunckle wrote:Isn't the whole "wall of amps" thing sorta played out? Half the time the stage lights shine through the speaker holes and you can tell they're fake.
Know what would be WAY better? A fucking wall of strippers farting smoke.
