Walt, first thing I would do is see if rolling down your volume knob helps the situation more than it hurts your tone. If not, try using an eq pedal or something that allows you to cut the volume without any weird tone suck. If none of that is feasible, see if there's a trimpot inside the preamp on the instrument to roll off the output. You can do that first, but if you like the way it drives every other amp I would hold off on that.

No problem, I've had similar problems with specific amps. Even with just really hot passive pickups.

welp, no trim pot on my bass's preamp. i was *really* hoping it would be that easy.

next chance i get to play with my rig i'll try messing with the volume control on the bass and seeing how hot i can run the pf's pre before it freaks out. i just want some nice ampeg grit please.

I just picked up a Univox/Unicord STAGE 720 4x10 combo. I'm shocked at how rad this amp sounds.

Hello everybody,

I'm new on this forum, and I'm considering about buying a CR120.

Initially, I wanted an OR15. I tried one in a guitar shop, and the sound was awesome. But, I'm playing doom (with some black metal influences) in a band, and loud, and I think it will be hard to be hearded on reharsal (my drummer plays pretty loud too). I saw some videos on YouTube, but not much uses low tunings (I mean B or drop A).

I really love massive sounds, like Conan, Ufomammut, Cough or Monarch!
First, do you think I'll get satisfyed with this amp ? (I know it won't sound like à Matamp GT120...)

Then, is it possible, for CR120 owners, to post some massive sounds on low tunings with that amp ?

Thank you very much !

Head over to the Doom Room, for a start.
Bunch of dudes own those.
I have a little CR20 practice amp.
It is really nice.
The guys with the 120s love theirs.
Eyehategod are now usibg them in conjunction with their SS150s as well.
I think ud be fine if youre just riffing out.
Dont expect it to catxh all the painful, head explodibg nuance of Monarch, but it'll certainly punch in a dick or five.
Alsi, I love Monarch.

the CR120 is a great amp.

I had it, I've also got a Matamp, and true the CR120 cant keep up volume wise, but its still plenty loud enough.

as for demo's i did a few:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39hb4Kg40zU

there are few others if you search for Doom reviews...pretty sure SLK did a few too.

finally i will say, i didnt like how it played with dirt pedals, but onboard dirt is really nice actually so you can go with out.

Here is a quick sample of the late 70's Unicord 720 4x10 open back combo. Everything on the amp is on 10/full except for the Treble knob which is at noon. The left channel is a Sennheiser E609 and the right is a Shure PG56. I added a bit of compression to even the tracks.

Great sound! Nice fat growl, perfect for doom! Try putting a big muff in front of it for mayhem! Thanks for the upload.
