Re: The Whiskey Thread
I'm a fan of Glennfiddich 12 and 15 year.
If I'm mixing it with whatever I use Jim Beam or Canadian Club
Anyone had a drink called a Godfather?

Re: The Whiskey Thread
I went to buy a nice Scotch but couldn't find what I wanted, so a friend told me to try Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition, which is aged in Stout barrels. Now, I am no fan of Jameson, but it was only like $30 and he insisted it was great, so I went for it, and..... it is actually really fucking nice. Like, I'd buy a few bottles to keep in reserve if I could find 'em. Pretty much all the fumey edges of regular Jameson are polished off, replaced by a smooth and toasty dark chocolate vibe with a hint of molasses-like sweetness and a really nice creamy mouthfeel (kek). I got the last bottle at the local and I think it's a somewhat limited release, so if you see one, give it a shot.
There's also apparently a reverse product, craft beers aged in Jameson barrels. Gonna have to chase some down.

Similar boat to Andrew. Bourbon prices are stupid downunder.

does AU/NZ mostly get bigger brands or are there some smaller bourbons from the states, too?

I am pretty much a bourbon girl. My go-to affordable bottle is Makers Mark. I drink enough that I can't really afford to go much above that. lol. I am afraid if I try some of the "good" ones, I won't be able to go back to down to the normal tier.

Re: The Whiskey Thread
Makers mark is a wheated bourbon. Most other wheaters are expensive but you should try some Old Weller Antique 107, or Weller 12 if you can get it. Both should be <40 a bottle.aens_wife wrote:I am pretty much a bourbon girl. My go-to affordable bottle is Makers Mark. I drink enough that I can't really afford to go much above that. lol. I also love me some Four Roses small batch/single barrel. Yum.

I've said it earlier in the thread, but if you can find Eagle Rare it's everybit as good as Maker's (actually, Maker's is my least favourite of the more expensive ones I've tried) and will come in at $25 for a 750.aens_wife wrote:I am pretty much a bourbon girl. Re: The Whiskey Thread
That is good to know. I am always a little afraid to buy a 750 of something new in case i hate it. I need to find a good bar that has some other good stuff to try.bloatedsack wrote:I've said it earlier in the thread, but if you can find Eagle Rare it's everybit as good as Maker's (actually, Maker's is my least favourite of the more expensive ones I've tried) and will come in at $25 for a 750.aens_wife wrote:I am pretty much a bourbon girl. Same. Wild Turkey when I feel spendy, Evan Williams when I don't.

Re: The Whiskey Thread
Like many here I'm all about the Islay.
Favourite jam at the moment is this:

Strangely, despite Sweden being
a) full of alcoholics
b) a large producer of barley (and wheat and rye for that matter)
we've never been a whisky producing nation. Mackmyra was established in 1999 and has just started producing decent stuff, including one smoky whisky - Mackmyra Rök. It's pretty rad, because it is smoked with juniper bush rather than peat and it gives it a very different (and very Swedish) flavour. Most sausage and stuff is smoked with juniper here.
Anyways, if you can get a hold of it you should try it because it's a nice complement to the Islay flavours.

Re: The Whiskey Thread
Pretty much just the big brands. We have a couple of speciality whiskey shops, but they lean heavily towards scotch.sleep_debt wrote:does AU/NZ mostly get bigger brands or are there some smaller bourbons from the states, too?
Look upon these prices and despair!

Re: The Whiskey Thread
I be broke as fuck, so Jim Beam is usually about all I can afford. I've actually found I don't like Makers or Knob Creek, and I've never tried anything more expensive than that due to being broke as fuck. As for Whiskey, I'm a Bushmill's boy. I've tried to get into Scotch, but it hasn't hooked me yet. The only one I ever really liked was the Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban with the port cask finish.
