my movie external HD took a shit and I need a reliable HD that I can store all my movies on. Looking for a 1TB. Doesn't need to be SSD as I can't afford that.
using a 2011 MBP which has USB 2.0, firewire and thunderbolt ports.

Re: External HDs
Remember, too, that most external hard drives all have a branded hard drive inside them. Whether the drive is Western digital, Toshiba, Seagage or Samsung is up to whom ever made the enclosure.
You say your external died but it's possible the enclosure is bad and the HDD is still good.
Basically buy something with a reputable brand and decent warranty. I've had an Iomega for nine years still going strong. Have a western digital. It's still kicking.

It was a WD drive but probably a lower end one - came with the Optibay kit for my MBP, where you replace the cd rom with another HD.odontophobia wrote:Remember, too, that most external hard drives all have a branded hard drive inside them. I tried a different enclosure and it's not the enclosure. The bad drive in question makes a kind of clicking sound like it's trying to boot. I tried to open Disc Utility to see if that would help but my computer wouldn't even recognize the drive.

Yeah. That's a bad drive then. Really up to you what's next.
I don't know that this forum has a significant amount of brand allegiance when it comes to HDDs.

It does. ss/bsodontophobia wrote:I don't know that this forum has a significant amount of brand allegiance when it comes to HDDs.
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.

WD is the way to go.
However, I still have a 1 TB Seagate that I bought in 2010.
So yeah...
Get a Seagate.

been using the same 1tb mybook for the past 8+ years now. never filled up more than half of it at any given time. it is starting to act a bit slow when it gets left plugged into my computer for longer than a few hours though these days.

I vote WD, I've had multiple Seagates die on me. This was in the mid 2000s, but I haven't bought a Seagate since and all of my WDs are still kicking.

I've had nothing but good luck with OWC and the stuff they sell.
Horrible luck with Lacie. Like, catastrophic failure of a drive with my portfolio on it that I had to pay $1500 to recover horrible.
Used to really like Glyph but apparently their quality control might have dipped in the last few years, to which I cannot personally attest, but have nonetheless heard through the grapevine.
