Time Lapse of 3D printing some chess pawns

Post by culturejam »

Yeah, this is nerd piled on geek piled on dweeb, but I love to stack my geeky hobbies when possible.

I've been into 3D printing for a while now, and I've been a photography nut for many many years. I recently got a cool gaj to allow my Canon 6D to do time lapse, so I figured I'd do a vidja of the printer cranking out some chess pawns (I'm working on a full set). I'm really not much of a chess player, but chess sets make neat decoratives, so what the hell, right?

Total print time was 1.5 hours (I use very slow settings because the quality is much higher), and at 20 frames per second, the resulting video is a little over a minute. I set the camera to take a photo every 4 seconds; there are a total of 1400 photos that comprise the video content.

Notice the full-sized laminated Waffle House menu in the background. I also have a salt/pepper shaker set (not pictured).

I think the lasercutter is a bit up more my alley, but that might come down to the fact that I don't want to make a lot of stuff in plastic, I'd rather cut them the way they already are in wood/leather/alumininiunium.
Laser is a lot more expensive. And if you want to cut metal, it's big bucks. At Function f(x), we have a 30w laser, and it can't even mark aluminum very visibly. It's just strong enough to cut through the powdercoat on the enclosures, but not strong enough to cut the aluminum. Our machine was about $10k, although you can get cheap Chinese laser engravers on ebay/ali-express for about a third of that. The downside to the Chinese units is that it can sometimes be difficult to get replacement parts and you are totally on your own for any kind of support/help. But, for a hobby machine, I've heard they aren't too bad.

I bit the bullet and got Simplify3D. It's almost as much as the printer, but I got before I bought this particular printer (I have another one as well). The free stuff out there is pretty damn good, so I'd go with something like Cura for software. I've used it and it's quite good.

Just to pile on a bit, there are hacker communities built around just about every printer model, and most of the printers can be tweaked or majorly modded to extend or improve performance. And the kicker is that most of the mod parts can be ... wait for it ... 3D printed! :joy:
