We might take you up on that. My wife's family is just south of Remagen. I showed her your children with lanterns picture, on instagram. She told me all about it. The parade. The singing. The guy on horseback. Something about a dude made of pastry, with raisins for eyes and a pipe??? How these lovely lanterns didn't cause hundreds of little fires. She even found some YouTube videos of it. I could use more of that in my life, and less of what's ahead here.

You're welcome to crash at my place until we elect the Swedish Democrats who will promptly get rid of all immigrants. Except if you're white. Because then you're ok.

My German grandmother fled a concentration camp to escape the Nazis. Then I go and marry an American. I can't escape these wretched fuckers!
Yeah, my parents were lapsed Jews who started practicing again when the Nazis rolled into town, because apparently a ton of people in the Netherlands were doing so as a form of peaceful protest, thinking "they can't take us all."

And then they realized, "Oh shit, they really can."

There's also a story about how my grandfather got a gun, and every night would tell my grandmother "I think this is it. This is the night we need to end it all." And each night she would tell him, "Let's rest, and see how things are in the morning."

I think I need some more of my grandmother's strength today.

Oh, that is awesome!

When I was little the lanterns had actual candles in them and we held on to them like crazy because we were mega-afraid of a possible fire breaking out. Nowadays those things are battery powered little LED's. (Nothing that wouldn't benefit from the capable hands of a boutique pedal builder.)
But apart from Saint Martin on horseback there is also the tradition of a huge bonfire lit on the night and something very similar to trick-or-treating. We call it Schnörzen over here, you can go from house to house, but mostly you just raid stores or any place that will be open for public any way. Me and my daughter's mother took the little ones (only one of them is actually mine, another is like a step-son and the other two are the neighbor's children) into a bar where Tortoise was playing. Man, I wish I'd have gotten a ticket for them singing there!

Any way: even without rent or fleeing from Dofus any of y'all can hit me up and crash if you want to see a big ass cathedral and drink lots of beer! I guess this is a time when wanderlust hits many people.

Oh, yeah, she told me about the bonfire, too! Since coming over here, and holidays like Halloween (and even Christmas, to an extent) feeling somewhat foreign to her, it was nice to see something light up her eyes like this. So, thanks for that. She, also, holds Carnival in pretty high regard, too, it seems.

(BTW, Kölsch is my favorite German libation. So, you can says she taught me right. ;) )

For real though, this is all fun talk, but how difficult is it, realistically, for a poor but charismatic and hard working Murican dude like me to move his family abroad semi-permanently?

Very low. Realistically, the easiest way around that is a long term employment contract located an EU country with an EU company. Other than that, if single, you are pretty much out of luck except for a student visa, but you're gonna have to be able to show you can front tuition or starting a family with someone from there.

What D'arcy said. It depends on a bunch of factors: education, net worth, ancestry, family, etc.

But, in order to be more positive: You can stay in Canada or Mexico (and some other spots) for up to 6 months without a visa, while the general rule of thumb for the EU is 90 days. You can also get a working holiday visa if you're under 30 to places like Australia and the UK and New Zealand which will let you stay longer -- basically as long as the job lasts, I know some people who go to New Zealand to work at ski resorts in the US summer, for example -- but that's not really ideal for what you're looking for.
good deals are here.

Incredibly. Imagine us all trying to get into america to live, it's very dificult and costly. We can barely get through your airports.

I wish someone would give me a work visa to wait tables.

At this point I would take just about any job to get out of here.
