I've thought about it from time to time, but the music scene in my area is so shitty. There are some decent bands but they are all looking for either a drummer or a singer, not a bassist. I'm not learning the damn drums and I actually can sing, but the music has to be something I'm really interested in. My preference in a band situation would actually be to sing, funny enough.

I've thought about hitting some of you dudes up for like a drop box band. Or something like that. We could share files and compile shit.
Yes please.

I think there's also some software that allows people to play music with each other over the internets, compensating for latency, etc.

Ninjam, if I remember correctly.
Yep : http://www.cockos.com/ninjam/

Made by people who make Reaper, so probably awesome. Also, free.

Latency makes that weird as hell to attempt. That ninjam has a clever solution by doing the reverse and increasing the latency to intervals and measures. Clever folk there.

Yeah this sounds fun. Could do something similar to the ILF open source comp.

ILF battle of the fuzz. Pair random groups and see what they can make?

I'm down! I've got a DI on my amp and an interface. I just need a good program to record in. Any thoughts? I don't want to spend a fortune.

Reaper is decent fo sure. You can get the unlocked software for free and buy/donate if you'd like which is $60.

Ok so I took a couple hours to spreadsheet a dozen rental rehearsal spaces and of those which would allow the 2 rehearsals a month thing and I'm looking at 30-60€ to split. It's not that bad as I thought but I don't quite get how different the prices are because the features of said spaces are essentially the same: shitty gear.

dude i think that most important thing is to find people you gel with.

i've been playing with my same friend for a few years. we've molded our styles together so much over the last year and a half just because our personalities mesh. we push one another in different ways. he'll write more complicated riffs. i'll write something doomy and basic that he would never think to do. what we bring to the table often ends up complimenting each other but because we feel an actual connection on a personal level rather than "because we're in a band together" it's a lot easier to have discussions about ideas that we think suck or who needs to take a back seat and when. and at the end of the day it's a helluva a lot more fun.

its not without its frustrations. the other two band members are occasionally flaky and that can often times make you want to kick them out. but for us we're just looking to maybe play some gigs here and there, record our own music and have fun. we're on a little hold while i get ready for some life changes but our band is high commitment but low TIME consumption. practice is once a week, the same day, the same time, for two hours. we're not trying to eat into the rest of our lives or tour or be famous. those things work in our favor. we're making music for ourselves which seems to set us apart.

This sounds like the ideal for those of us with a wife, kid and demanding job...I just wanna get beyond my practice space. I haven't played in a band in over a decade, and it kinda sucks to not play and practice with people. It's good for us as players, and people. So is paying bills on time, and taking care of family. Not sure they are mutually exclusive, but adulting and bands can sometimes be in conflict. That being said two of my friends have figured out how to have stable families and still tour nationally on the regular to support their families. I just took more conventional path. They took bigger risks [but were more talented by a mile].
