perhaps "ultimate manilow" is the description of the completion of a gear purchase that results from a post on this thread?
"i just ultimate manilow'd a roland juno 106 for $135..."
Only reason we even have a hand in the gear market is because there are a number of up and coming manufacturers that started around here. But even then that's really limited. What ILF does carry is an illusion of power, which the other big forums also have. We talk about the trends that sprout up as they are happening, which from an outsider point of view looks a if we were taking about them beforehand.
Even then I do concede that there have been threads that've had an impact on pedals, I can think of the infamous PLL thread here and the Klon thread on TGP that spawned clones of those two previous unobtanium pedals. But that's only two threads out of thousands.
Hell, Knobs has had a bigger impact on the gear market than we. Just look at the used price of pedals after one of their videos.

Well I personally know I've had an impact on the gear market. Not as big as Knobs, but I have people PM me all the time asking about products because I've owned so much. LOL
I've also had an impact on the bottom line for a lot of companies by repeatedly buying their items after I flip them!! hahahahahaha
Talkbass has been responsible for several pedal re-releases. Bass Whammy, Future Impact...pretty sure several DOD's because of the want there. So those nerds are better than us in that regard.
We are all whores though. Isn't that what we've set out to be??????????

I don't think anyone carries any notion that we're 'important' to the wide world of gear beyond being sort of a highly-encouraging fermenting zone for interesting ideas and builders, but following your theory, Knobs is part of ILF. It's not like homey's demo choices aren't influenced by the fine folks he chooses to associate with on the internet.
Also, I hate to go full Isengard but there are a ton of builders/friends of the site that you're missing or not giving enough credit to if your scope is limited to the last couple of years.

That's a great price on a gorgeous pedal, someone here needs to buy that. Plus, that's a tough finish to find for sale, I bought one a few months ago (for more than this), and I'd been trying to snag one for a couple of years prior to that.

i appreciate the back story D.o.S. i am new to this forum for the most part and generally cruise threads without saying much. my "ultimate manilow" insinuation relating to gear heads wielding a mighty influential sword was mostly a humorous quip. i know this forum has been active for far longer than i've frequented it - and that's a good thing. community creates dialogue and dialogue creates such gems as "inverted jwar" or "reverse jwar". these literary treasures would not be possible without the forum. as steven hawking said, "the universe created itself because it had to."
