Actually, yes. I didn't mention it because I wasn't sure if they were really necessary, but I did get one for convenience sake with a 1/4" output and headphone amp. But if I didn't have one, could you just patch from vca to a mixer with a 1/8" to 1/4" cable?

I mean, yes technically but A) you'd be wasting an entire VCA output and B) Modular signals are REALLY HOT so it would be both extremely loud and any small change in the knob would change the volume drastically.Dark Barn wrote:Actually, yes. Don't forget patch cables.Dark Barn wrote:Well, Perfect Circuit has these Tiptop cases for pre-order. I ordered one, I have modules that will get here before that case so, I'd like to get crack a lackin. I think I have everything I need for a mostly basic voice, maybe someone could tell me if I'm wrong. I have picked up a VCO, a VCF, a VCA/mixer, an envelope generator, and a MIDI/CV interface. So I think that covers the meat and potatoes. Right?

Also, modulation sources. There are some cheap dual LFO modules that would be fine for a small system, for example.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
Yes! This I recognize as a weak point in what I have so far. I have a modulation source high on the list of things to get. So I organized my modulargrid WIP a little bit and feel like I can share it now. The bottom row are all things that I have on the way. The top row are things that I'd like to add, sort of in order of importance to me. And the empty space is for your suggestions, if you have them. Also on the bottom row, the Dr. Octature filter was not on my shopping list, but I found a good deal on it. So I figured it was worth a spin.oscillateur wrote:Also, modulation sources. DIY folks: Modular Addict now has partial kits for the Meng Qi Hands, Karp, and DU-KRPLS.

So close to putting together a modular as an drum machine setup. I want to build my own rack and DIY the modules. Found one for a tr-808 kick which I like. Talk me out of this pls
(Or recommend other cheapo stuff I can start with)

If it's for drums, it might be (or not) a bit overkill depending on your needs. Sequencing and sound generation are two things that you'll need properly covered, and for a modular to be better than a dedicated machine you'll need quite a bunch of modules, or you have to want to do things that can not easily be done with other sequencers, for example.
What kind of things do you want to do ?

Don't know really, just saw the kick module and was like "hm, I wonder if I could put together a cool unique drum machine with this". Because the tr-808 kick is so unique
I don't know. I really want to DIY synths and modular seems fun

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
I did some more tweaking on my modular grid doo-dad. And this is where I'm at, some of these modules are here or on the way, some will have to wait for a while.
So I have a few wants from my modular: Sequenced basses and melodies from MIDI, duophonic playing from Linnstrument to modular, internally sequenced novelties, and generative noise and/or melody.
The main thing I'm unsure about is if this filter will cut it for when I connect the Linnstrument, I really could use a double filter or two filters. I *could* use the Disting as a second filter, but then maybe I should be looking to keep the Disting for other purposes in patches where i am using the Linnstrument. The Linnstrument can (and often will) be set up to control two filters in addition to gate/pitch/with aftertouch controlling some sort of modulation other than the filter.
The other thing I'm unsure of is if I have *enough* VCAs and mixing. If I had to make space I would get rid of Dr. Octature and/or Clouds, to get a proper filter for this set-up and for more mixing/vca if needed.
Finally the Rene seems cool, but I'm up for suggestions for whatever sequencer you think will lead to the most eureka moments.
EDIT: apparently modulargrid image links update in realtime when you make alterations on modulargrid. The image I had linked here no longer bears resemblance to the text of the post, so i took the picture down...

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
I think some idea of what you want to do will help. Like, beats usable in a normal musical context? Or weird glitchy beats that aren't just x0x clones? If the latter, I'm doing something similar. For perc, you def want envelopes and VCAs and noise sources or evenlopes and just dedicated drum modules. A clock divider will be very help. I'm dedicating a corner of my rig to weird drums and am planning/have a 4ms RCD clock divider, a Malekko noise, a Synthrotek DS-M, a Pico Drums, a Make Noise Maths and a Make Noise Moddemix, as well as some logic (like a simple passive OR). That should get me making some cool rhythms.Brandsmannen wrote:So close to putting together a modular as an drum machine setup. I want to build my own rack and DIY the modules. Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
Not modular but looking for suggestions...
I got a Microbrute and a beatstep. I'm getting some cool sounds and digging the sequencing and stuff.
What can I add next? I feel like I can only add a euro rack setup at this point. I don't have the coin to buy a case and modules at the moment. Anything else I should check out before adding a full blown modular setup?
